Forums - Sales - Writing off the 360

well
what i do know is, is the ps3 is selling more software in europe than the 360 with a significant higher userbase for the 360
that's what all the playstation optimism is based on actually, it's primarily based on the european performance of the ps3 i think

cus japan is no battle
and the 360 is doing a real descent job in north america
and will probably keep standing quite tall in 2008
but it's the Others region, which might overtake the north american market as the biggest market in the coming years, that has turned quite some opinions here

And just because the PS3 is preforming well means that 3rd party software developers discredit the Xbox 360 in terms of sales?

As much as European software matters, America matters just as much.

What is a 3rd party developer going to care about more? That Assassains Creed on PS3 outsold the X360 version by 10,000 units, or that Assassain's Creed on X360 outsold the PS3 version by 700,000 units?

Likewise, is Activision going to care more about Call of Duty 4 on X360 only outselling the PS3 version by a "measly" 200,000 copies, or the fact that COD4 on X360 has outsold the PS3 version by 1.3 million copies?

The fact is, Ajax, developers are going to look at the fact the PS3 has only managed to have 2 games sell over 1m copies in it's 1+ year on the market, and realize the X360 has sold over 10 times that in non-bundled software titles.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

TOO EARLY TO WRITE OFF ANYONE OF THE THREE COMPANIES,IMO.

Quality for Life

Even with the *success* on the PS3 in Europe, it's still going to take a ton of time to chip away at the 360's lead. And yeah, the Euro gamers have PS loyalty, but the real question is - are they buying the PS for the name only? And yes, it's whipping the 360 by a 100K some weeks in Others.

It's a long, long way for the PS3 to overtake the 360. The Wii is showing folks what it takes to dethrone the 360 - lower price point, innovative controls and just a fun experience. Sadly, neither the 360 or the pS3 have these.

The 360's lead over the PS3 may evaporate, but with surplus funds, you can bet MS will keep dropping the price of the 360 until Sony is bleeding like a person in open-heart surgery in need of a torniquet. It will end up being 'Who has the deepest pockets' and Sony will lose that fight.

mrstickball
why aren't you actually reading what i say
i'm just giving a reason why their is some kind of playstation euforia the last weeks
what do you think then that is the reason the climate has changed, if the strong sales of the european region aren't a great influence in this?

you also say

And just because the PS3 is preforming well means that 3rd party software developers discredit the Xbox 360 in terms of sales?

sales have only an analytical value if compared with each other
so it's not important THAT the ps3 is preforming well or better
it's important to know why the ps3 does it and under which conditions
then you can, you could say, see the 'value' of it's performance

so you shouldn't just say that the performance of the ps3 shouldn't stop developers for investing in the 360,
but look and see what that performance actually is based on and see that relative to the 360's

''Hadouken!''

People (Wii Fanboys) are writing it off because the Wii had an 1 million+ week, now they are on a high, thinking it can't be stopped.

and what you say about the american sales of ps3 and 360 is no discussion point actually, cuz everyone quite agrees that the 360 is strong in na

that's why i say that the euforia is based on european sales for a great part

and of course you then can say that that shouldn't be a reason to write the 360 off,
and i think you are right with that
why that need to draw conclusions at this time?

''Hadouken!''

@DMeisterJ well you have to admit there hasn't been much to say that it won't be stopped.

I think a big factor for people thinking that the 360 will run out of steam is that it's big gun Halo 3 is already out, no that no other actual great exclusive games will come out for it but that was it's biggest hitter. And the PS3 isn't being outsold by a huge margin and that's before it's own big games are released. It'll be interesting to see how the year turns out.

~ Steam ~

While it's true that the Software lineup of the 360 is more diverse than the lineup of the XBox, I would argue that this isn't really the point. It's all about perception.

Case in point - the Gamecube. GC had the reputation of being a children's console. Many fans pointed out that this wasn't true because it had 'adult' games such as RE4, RE Zero, Metal Gear Twin Snakes etc. the public didn't see it that way. The public found that a handful of high-profile adult titles weren't enough to significantly alter the perception of a children's console.

Same thing with the 360. Releasing Viva Pinata or some quiz game isn't enough to significantly change people's perception of the 360 being a console for teenage boys and young men. And I think this is the Box's biggest image problem in Europe where shooters simply aren't as popular as in America (at least on consoles). Don't look at all games, just look at the BIG games, the games with high profile. They're dominated by Sci Fi shooters where guys with massive muscles march through endless grey corridors and shoot/decapitate/disembowl massive hordes of enemies. Sure, that's great for boys and young men, but anybody outside of that group would never touch those games.

These games are the videogame equivalent of Steven Seagal action movies. SS movies have their loyal fans, they all turn a profit and always have around 5 Million people who watch them. But in order to be a successful movie studio you also need to release romcoms, comedies, Oscar-worthy dramas, tearjerkers, arthouse, Fantasy, thrillers, love stories etc. (and not just one or two of each, but LOTS). Then you don't just have 5 Million customers but 200 Million.

Action games have a huge image problem in large parts of Europe. Many parents would never buy such games for their kids and outside of their (admittedly large) target group they hold virtually zero appeal.
