Well I guess if you consider something that is tracking less than Gamecube in Japan in the same time a success then yea you have a point.

 

Understandable, PS3 is selling like the Gamecube. Well its the PS3 second year we are heading into and the PS3 already has close to 2 million in Japan. The Gamecube only manage to sell approx. 4.5 million units. Well the PS3 will surpass the Gamecube in the coming years or early than that. The PS3 was a dud in my opinion this generation. But its the first dud that Sony has encountered other than the PSP.

You could buy 2 Wii's for the price of one 80 gig, thats whats happnening, Eugene. But PS3 is still outselling 360 in Japan by about 3x.

Anyway, reason playstation is "failing" (which is an exaggeration by the way) is because Nintendo is taking control everywhere. The country is very much a "always on the move" type of country, that's why the DS and to a lesser extent, the PSP are so popular. My guess is that the pick up and play for 15 minutes experience the Wii can give is a lot more popular then the "you must invest a few hours in the game to get a great experience" that the PS3 and 360 offer. Also, gaming is a huge part of their culture (like Hockey in Canada, Cricket in India and Grid Iron to America) which means that almost everyone plays (in some shape or form) and Nintendo captured that perfectly with the DS and Wii.

most likely the result of japans shift from hardcore to casual, we have seen how wii fit and mario party have done, and how small big games are doing



                 With regard to Call of Duty 4 having an ultra short single player campaign, I guess it may well have been due to the size limitations of DVD on the XBox 360, one of various limitations multi-platform game designers will have to take into consideration-Mike B

Game trailers-Halo 3 only dissapointed the people who wanted to be dissapointed.

I don't think Japan has really shifted to casual gaming. I think casual gaming has opened up peoples tastes and brought more people in. It's like a country who has been eating sushi for years and suddenly they've been introduced to pizza. Some people will like the new food and some people won't. It doesn't mean they hate sushi and will stop eating it.

At least it has a japanese audience, there is almost no point in releasing games for xbox
