and we all know that Japan accounts for 90% of the gaming population in the world right?
Anyway, reason playstation is "failing" (which is an exaggeration by the way) is because Nintendo is taking control everywhere. The country is very much a "always on the move" type of country, that's why the DS and to a lesser extent, the PSP are so popular. My guess is that the pick up and play for 15 minutes experience the Wii can give is a lot more popular then the "you must invest a few hours in the game to get a great experience" that the PS3 and 360 offer. Also, gaming is a huge part of their culture (like Hockey in Canada, Cricket in India and Grid Iron to America) which means that almost everyone plays (in some shape or form) and Nintendo captured that perfectly with the DS and Wii.
