55k isn't bad at all.
The Wii has just hit Japan with some big hitters, SMG and Wii Fit.
The PS3 hasn't made a suitable counter yet, only releasing a prologue to GT5.

Actually the Saturn did fairly well for itself in Japan. At the time it was most success Sega had ever seen in Japan, and it garnered a reputation as a "real" gamers console. The Saturn sold more than the N64 in Japan.
And size was one of the factors frequently blamed on the failure of the Xbox in Japan.

Why? Because the Japanese market is not large enough to support 2 different consoles doing well, let alone 3.

On Topic: PS3 is doing fine if the original poster would check out the front page and find out it is doing fine in all territories.
Since the late 90s the Japaneese gaming market was shrinking; arcades, home consoles, portable systems and games in general were all seeing declining sales every year. The DS came and changed that because it filled a need in the market which everyone was ignoring ... Japaneese games like the novelty of new games, it is one of the main reasons why arcades survived there much longer than they have in every other region around the world.
To put it bluntly, the PS3 offers nothing new and is selling 'lousy' because the Wii and DS fit the Japaneese gaming tastes far better.
lol ppl saying ps3 hasnt got a major tittle are really annoying, PS3 has got DW6, W11 2008 and GT5 Prologue + price cut + new color and still lagging behind the wii in the holiday season, admit it, theres no way it can get better than it already is.

Well I guess if you consider something that is tracking less than Gamecube in Japan in the same time a success then yea you have a point.
