Actually the Saturn did fairly well for itself in Japan. At the time it was most success Sega had ever seen in Japan, and it garnered a reputation as a "real" gamers console. The Saturn sold more than the N64 in Japan.

And size was one of the factors frequently blamed on the failure of the Xbox in Japan.
