The Atari Jaguar.............

@ninpanda  i would argue that the PS1 was a safe haven for 2d games, the various fighters, Tomba, Pandemonium, Klonoa, Crash (sort of), Hearts of Darkeness, Rayman, Gex, hell thats of the top of my head, not even 64 had that much and that was a Ninty console.

OT, Wii my god, we still dont have a Mario Golf or Tennis. and no proper SWs game, i mean using a lightsaber scheme that doesnt suck

NGP.

definitely Wii. The fact that it is such a commercial success makes it an even more bitter defeat than the Dreamcast IMO.

I really hope some day in the distant future somebody does a thorough study on how this situation came to be and publishes it as a book or something. I'd love to know how this generation played out behind the scenes.

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

PS3 of course,it could have been the biggest thing in history if Sony would have played their cards right.

Agreed.

SONY can still play their cards right at the moment though, give the console a good send off, and leave a good taste in the consumers mouths ready for the PS4.

PS3!!!!!!!

it could be soo much bigger ^^

Notice the past tense in the thread title.

OT:

Yeah, the Dreamcast could've been soooo much more. But I can only imagine how great the Saturn would've been if it had actually ever gotten to its feet.

If SEGA wouldn't have fucked around with Sonic Xtreme, and had just released some proper Sonic games like this for the Saturn, it really could've been something.

Iirc, the Saturn was originally designed for 2D games, but jumped on the 3D bandwagon after being spooked out by Sony, when they showed the PlayStation. But if they had just kept their cool, it could've been a haven for 2D gaming. But, then again, pretty much nobody wanted to create 2D games that gen, (Part of the reason why I don't like gen 5 so much) so maybe not.

I agree fully with this.

Dreamcast and Wii are definately second and third.

But on Saturn, the flagship first party game was absent. Now THAT is what I call unrealized potential.

Sonic Xtreme not releasing is such a tragedy for gaming. The footage from its development really looked like a true classic Sonic, although in 3D. The game would probably have saved the Saturn.

Launching the Saturn with a 2D Sonic would have done wonders. It might have even made it outsell the PS1 for a few years.

And all that unused power, as shown by Shenmue.

Saturn's fate truly was a tragedy.

I LOVE ICELAND!
