I think this is a bit alarmist.

Way to soon in my opinion.  Sales will most likely follow the games.  This is a big gap of not many gams for sure, but you have to think sales will follow the usualy Pokemons and Mario Karts.  Nintendo deserves the benefit of the doubt with handhelds lol.

agree
don't worry about the 3ds : when pokemon, mario and mario kart gonna come out everything gonna be ok. I think 3ds is gonna be a blast at the next christmas season !

No, They should just rename it to "New Super 3DS"

If 3DS fails so will NGP and the handheld market (excluding Apple) would be dead.

This could off course happen if Ninty made an E.T. remake.

Okay, why are people so up in arms? VGC users flame the 3DS when there's no need to and start defending it when someone asks a question? He's just asking whether they could, not whether they should.

On topic, I'm not entirely sure. I mean, of course, in theory they can do anything, but, even supposing that 3DS weakens soon, I'd think it would tarnish their reputation too much after Wii/DS. If it starts dying off, Nintendo can just take an emergency route by cutting price and putting it up as the next in the DS line. Also, third parties would flee to Alpha Centauri if Nintendo destroyed the 3DS now, after the huge support they're offering it, which is something Nintendo simply cannot afford.

I feel far too reasonable for a fanboy.

3DS costs just over $100 to make.

They're selling them for $250.

They wont drop it while they can still make that much money out of people.

That is pretty much the tale of the pspgo. Yet everyone said that was a huge mistake.

I know the difference in sales is great, but making a lot of money off of a product is apparently not the right way to do business. Just look at everyone who said that pspgo was a disaster.

You mean Nintendo fans?

Anyone who's breaking the law is obvious a criminal.

Is it logical? No, not really. They might give it a short lifespan at some point but scrapping it? Not logical. They'll want to make back R&D at the very least.

Could they? Oh yeah. 3DS and Cafe could both crash and burn entirely and Nintendo would get up, dust itself off, and try one more time (with an extremely conservative Wii/DS-esque approach, no doubt).  They could completely for an entire generation and not go out of the business, though the level of losses they could sustain wouldn't match what Microsoft or Sony can shoulder.

We all know Nintendo in the past has scrapped a console. That console being Virtual Boy which Nintendo swept under the rug when it failed. Assuming Nintendo can't turn 3DS around and NGP kills it off this winter. Could Nintendo scrap 3DS?

Nintendo talked in 2004 that if DS failed they could always fall back on GBA and that platform would continue being supported. Well if 3DS fails could Nintendo keep the DS going strong long enough to give them time to launch another platform? Or long enough to let them keep it another generation?

Is Nintendo in a position where the option of scrapping is illogical? Does Nintendo even have a choice?

If Nintendo scrapped 3DS and released a new handheld in 2013 would they be able to recapture ground? Would it be too soon to launch another platform?

Disclaimer - I don't think Nintendo should scrap 3DS, I just think it would be interesting to get users opinions since Nintendo has scrapped hardware before. Is it an option for Nintendo and if so why? If not why not?

I will put my own 2 cents in later in the thread!

Can I Microwave My 3DS ?    Yep

Can Nintendo scrap the 3DS?  Yep

anyone can do whatever they want. Even if it is the dumbess thing in the world
