Great, gonna download it now. I was really afraid this would be something like Age of Farmville, but even if the first 10 hours are repetitive I'd work trhough that if it gets anywhere close to AoC level then. Also like the idea of race custumization. Thanks for the heads-up Scoobes :)

Oh, and is there a clan structure or anything like that? And how long does a real-time battle last on average?

It depends on the mission.  Simple missions like 'collect food/stone/wood' can be 5 minutes long.  A regular mission like kill Achillies or defend the town can take up to an hour.  Less for an experienced player.

Also, the game is rediculously easy until levle 20 or so.  Then suddenly there's a huge spike in difficulty.

Thanks, but I meant the end-game PvP. Although if it's anything like AoC I guess it'll vary a lot?

Meh. THat's about it. I hate the levelling. Absolutely hated it. I find it utterly pointless. This MAY have changed the game since last i played ( 1 month ago, maybe more) but they didn't even give you detailed information like armor and damage of pearticular units. There is a really good core, but it is covered by a whoooole lot of shit, and you have to dig deep to get to play the game in a state that is trully enjoyable and worthy of AoE.  Once you get there though, pretty fucking awesome.

Interesting but could you elaborate some more. First, do you mean the leveling is time-consuming, meaningless and boring but once you've done that the game becomes good?

And if so, how does it get good? (from an AoE 2 perspective)

Yes that is exactly what I mean. It is a worthless time sink that shouldn't exist, and it takes much longer than it should to get through it. The single-player quests I played weren't all that interesting (It's basically just AoE 2 missions with some improvements here or there, nothing on the scale of SC2 variety) and time consuming.

If the goal is an AoE2-like gameplay then the game is basically the escape sequence of Shawshank Redemption. You crawl through shit for a ridiculously long time and it is absolutely terrible, but then it is glorious.

I am also unsure that there is off-line play either, for LANs and stuff.

You are being way too harsh on the game.  If the game has any flaw, its just that its repetative.  But every RTS, from StarCraft to AOE is liek that.  Its about building a base and completing an objective.

Also, the game doesn't take longer than it should.  I've only played for probably 8-10 hours and I'm already level 30.  COuntless online games take way longer.  Heck, it took me longer to get a level 40 city in Age of Empires III.

Fans of Age of Empires will love the game.  Which is the point.  And I have a hard time believing you really played the game to level 40 when you complain so much about it being 'a worthless time sink that shouldn't exist'.

As for the question Slimebeast keeps asing, I will answer it.  here's PvP either 1v1 or 2v2.  Some quests even require playing human players.  And you can play human players anytime you want after a certain level (I think level 6).  Though most people wait till level 40 when they have their full skill list.

That's another thing.  This game allows you to unlock units how you want.  If you play more towards using siege and calvary, you can focus on that.  If you focus more on fast economy and long range units (like I do), it allows you to focus on that.  That's where the addicting aspect of the game is, being able to unlock new units and upgrades.

I'd also like to emphasize this game is in early Beta and the only playable race is the Greeks.  They're going to release the Egyptians soon and its implied that the Persians are in the game.

That is true, repetative. However the multiplayer (PVP in this case) aspect is what is least repetative, and you can't even do that right off the bat. Hell, there is basically a giant sign that say "fuck you, you can't play multiplayer until you finish the boring single-player." 8-10 hours to level 30 is 16-20 times more than I should have to spend. It's not fun, it's tedious, and worst of all, required. For your information, I stopped around level 17. That's the whole point, there is so much crap to put up with that it's annoying. Also, I want my fucking advanced stats damn it (again I havent played in a month or two so they may have added those without my knowledge).

Also I think it was level 8 you can PVP but that may be just bad memory on my part. Plus you have crappy units at that point making it almost pointless.

You fail to understand the problem. You shouldn't HAVE to unlock units. They should be unlocked right off the bat for you to play as you wish. That isn't the addicting part, that is the piece of shit part. Just like in CoD4, BC2, and ANY other game where you have to "unlock" the game, the mechanic is absolutely worthless and should never have been implemented. Save the levelling up for RPGs and let me play my complete game right off the bat. If the game is too shitty to stand on its own, then too bad, don't add crutches.

It is absolutely frustrating seeing an amazing game mired in so much useless, artificial shit that it feels like I have to work to earn my fun.

Then go play AOEII.

Also, for the record, I think the 'leveling' aspect is good.  Especailly for new players as it gives them an oppertunity to try different units and strategies in a controlled 'mission' environment.  Frankly, I started with AOEII and spend WAY over 10 hours to ;learn the ropes' through trial and error playing vs people and the computer.  And they sure weren't going to sit and wait while I learned how to use specific units or build slowly.

You have something really personal against this game.  And I frankly don't see why you put so much effort into hating it when it clearly is made to appeal to the crowd who likes the standard leveling/reward system of an MMO.  If you want all your units and gameplay options right off the bat, there's 4 other 'Age of'games available to you.

Just 2v2 PVP?  so no 8 player Death match games? Do they plan to have them?

I was hoping it could be a game all my family and friends could play together.

I've played the first 3 levels and I've enjoyed it so far.

Yeah that's a let down. I always wanted at least 3v3 in my AoE matches 2 online and I almost never played any 1v1.

4v4 rules though. Especially in the modified crazy Death Match scenarios (they changed names from the original DM, I dont remmember anymore). There was so much variety.

I'm very sceptical about this as it looks as a cartoon and childish. Is it simplified?

No, why am I even trying. This game will never give me any of that satisfaction Age of Kings did. Oh, how I miss those times.

It has elements of all the old Age of Empires games from the past. I wouldn't say it's simplified; you build up and gain access to technologies, upgrades and buildings as you play (not in real-time). The good stuff takes a lil' while as you need to be at lvl 20 (out of 40) to get access to Final Age techs, but theres strategy in what to unlock and what units to upgrade or specialise in. Theres a lot of customisation regardless of which civ you play as and your civ becomes what you want it to be (e.g. If you want powerful archers you can build an archery school in your home city and buy specilaised archer techs from their). The core gameplay is still intact though.

There is a non-real time area that doubles up as your city (like in Age III but with more depth). From there, you can invest in buildings that give you access to upgrades and get given story based quests (the campaign mode basically), co-op quests and PVP matches. Also, each unit has its own armor and weapon upgrades for you to attach that can also make a big difference when you play a quest/Real-Time game.

I'd say give it a go. Not sure it'll be the same as Age2... but lets face, not a lot will :P

You're selling this game to me. There's so many good games coming and I have a huge back-logue and too little time but now I'm tempted to try this out, just for that good old Age-feeling (God I loved that feeling. AoE 2 is still in my top 3 games of all time). When is the 48h download window again?

Now until Saturday morning-ish (but once you've signed up you'll be able to play whenever). Remember, it's free so what have you got to lose? And if theres stuff you don't like, just go on the forums and voice them! It's still in beta afterall :P

I'm working on it. Already spent nearly one hour just to download and install it. I don't know why but the Windows Live client just freezes and slows down everything on my PC. It takes 15 minutes before it responds. And when it was about to install it crashed (just after the "do you accept these terms"-thingy). And why is it only a ~20Mb file? Is that another client?

Grrrrrr.

Yeah, I wish they'd sort out GFWL. This is a step in the right direction for software at least.

The levelling part does make it addictive for many people though. They may not even find it "fun" for large sections but a levelling system will keep them comming back and that's what they're targetting. Just look at facebook games where all you do is press buttons and level up. Completely pointless, but it keeps those players comming back. And for others, the core AoE gameplay is still present.

As for the last part, lol, because so many games (mainly MMOs) do this now!

I dare throw the word "casual" right here, especially when it comes to the facebook games.

Also, are you trying to justify one shitty game mechanic with the argument that it's ok since there's a lot of games using it? If anything you should be outraged such an amount of games use it, not try to jutify other games with them.

I played it very briefly before, and it was pretty good, its very different to AoE2, but its an MMO, it has to be (something Vlad, doesn't quite seem to get), I know I'll be playing this game for ages to come, especially since its free :D
