Forums - Gaming Discussion - 100 greatest pop culture icons - only one VG character

I found this link earlier

http://www.thecustard.tv/linksandlists/100popcultureicons.html

It is the 100 greatest pop culture icons. What is wierd though is that the only video games character in the list is lara croft. No Mario, no Pacman, no Space invaders, not even Sonic the hedgehog (all of which IMO are bigger in pop culture than Lara Croft).

Fair enough Videogames are not the biggest thing ever but I think a list of 100 popular culture icons should at least feature 3 VG characters.

Lara croft bigger than ALL other video game characters?...Im gonna go away now.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned for Sega. - Jason Lee, Mallrats.

http://theaveragejoe.sportsblognet.com/ - Mainly American Football, snippets of Basketball, European Football and Hockey.

Lara Croft i think is the only Character that has been successful outside of video games, meaning that the movies actually were a hit and didn't bomb. I actually know people, who own Wiis and don't know who Mario is and yet know of Lara Croft.

Any context? It seems England-centric, in which case Lara Croft might make more sense than Mario. I mean, Beckham is #1? Not anywhere outside the commonwealth, he isn't. Spice Girls scoring higher than JFK? Elizabeth Hurley making the list, period?

It's one list, from four years ago. No big deal.

Mario is not pop culture
that is all

Quality for Life

That is awful.

People forget I guess that the original Nintendo was like the Wii -- pretty much everyone knew about it (Super Mario Bros.), let alone tried it. That's kind of what we call POP CULTURE.

Remember, this was on VH1, hardly on the pulse of pop culture (unless it was from the 80's)

David Beckham being number one is just idiotic.

I am a Gauntlet Adventurer.

I strive to improve my living conditions by hoarding gold, food, and sometimes keys and potions. I love adventure, fighting, and particularly winning - especially when there's a prize at stake. I occasionally get lost inside buildings and can't find the exit. I need food badly. What Video Game Character Are You?

The list appears to have been a snapshot at that moment in time -- Nov. 2003. Plus it was aimed at the VH1 demo (24-35+). And it is UK based (look at the list and the ads) as well.

So some things big to others (of different age groups and countries) and big now would not be on there.

I am Mario.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.
