That's completely insane. Mario, Link, Kirby and even Master Chief are much greater pop culture icons than Lara Croft.

Wasn't Lara Croft mascot of one U2 tour? She also made it to the movie world. She was a videogaming icon of one (short) period of time. So, it's somewhat justified.

What is not justified is leaving all the others (Mario, Duke nukem and so on)
