Forums - Gaming - Remedy boss: “The sooner we go digital, the better”

Game developers have a sick sense of entitlement. If gamers don't deem your game worth $60 and decide to buy it used or rent it instead, that is your fault for not creating something that gamer's highly value (or in many cases, your publisher's fault for not adequately marketing your game). If you couldn't buy used or rent, there is going to be a natural progression towards lower prices and gamers buying games on sales anyway. That is exactly what we are seeing with Steam and other digital distribution platforms right now on the PC. Didn't Shio once mention that he bought 40 PC games for $200? Is that what you'd prefer for console games Remedy? Probably not. lol. People may think "it's better to get some money from the bargain bin than to get nothing at all (used games or rentals)." But the truth is the gamers who sell used games usually use that money to buy more new games. And in order to rent games to renters like me, you have to actually buy the games. And how do you think rental companies like Gamefly come up with the funds to buy the discs to rent out? They get funded through subscriptions of course! (Or in the case of limited time rentals like Blockbuster, the rental fee that you pay to rent the game).

Gamestop did screw over the balance between used and new games though, when people buy a used game for 55 bucks and sell them for 15 when they could get 40 on ebay there is a problem

So there will be no price competition to the used game sales. This will lead to devs keeping their games at 60 bucks till the end of time cause theres no used game  competition. Once the video game industry goes full digital I will become an exclusive classic gamer. I still buy my steam games retail cause I like to have the physical copies.

Right the only thing keeping me away from pirating games are physical media.

If the industry goes digital only, there goes my money.

Just like PSN showed us.

I doubt Remedy is worried by that. They're making games for a company with a competent online service.

Since when did they change to Steam?

After Gabe threatened to eat them if they didn't.

I saw this coming, and yet I still laughed. Why?

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

Sorry, but that's pretty pathetic. You'd rather steal than pay someone for the work they have done, that you are now enjoying?

OT: I'm looking forward to a more digital future. Boosting digital sales means boosting independant developers, and cutting out the middlemen. We can't handle it with the current state of affairs though, we need more development platform-wise that will better let users spend their money on things they want.

Digitial only leaves less room for competition prices. Games will be at full price for years on end. I will not pay full price for over a 1 year old game and especially not if I can't get a physical copy. I don't support piracy but I would probably fall to the other side if this were to happen.

What are you basing this on? Why can't digital platforms compete?

PSN / Xbox Live prices. If games are digital only, is there even a reason to let retail outlets like Amazon sell game cards? They can just get more revenue at the primary source.

well no that won't happen.  same reason if there was only one console.

doesn't matter if no used game sales, if a game isn't selling a company will lower its price.

same if there was only one console.  the ps3 woudln't still be at $600.  people would not buy it cause its teh only one.

You are confusing video games with being a need.  video games are not a necessety and if they cost to much people will just not do them.

Oh, I was thinking for the industry as a whole, not just consoles. PC doesn't have any issues with digital at least. I don't think the issue lies in digital copies though; the issue lies in closed platforms. If the console manufacturers at some point support the idea of an open platform, digital only can work. Otherwise, it may not happen for a while.
