The Wii came was released second this generation and has annihilated both PS3 and 360. No one probably predicted that after Gamecube's mediocre to lackluster performance.
I for one actually think that MS have a great opportunity in terms of Kinect. It has had a great reception (especially by the casuals), so if MS improve on the technology and have it built in for the nextbox, they could have a huge success in their hands. By the time the nextbox releases, the casuals will probably have had enough with their Wiis, and since Nintendo seem to be going for the hardcore with their current console, I could see MS capturing the casual market that Nintendo currently has, with some good marketing and R&D (which they are good at). Plus on top of that MS will have the support from most hardcore 360 owners from this gen and 3rd parties as well.
So overall, they could very well succeed, but this is all only speculation.

MS won't have the third party support though, it will be spilt between ps3 (high userbase) and wii 2 (first next gen console) and again if they can't get kinect to work right with anything resembling a real game I don't think people will bite, Kinect has been going down in sales for a long time, and they still need a killer ap I don't think dance central is gonna sell a 400 console to alot of people

The only reason Kinect hasn't been selling is because there has been no software for it for the past few months. But if you take a look at this week's sales, you will see that as soon as Micheal Jackson's experience was released, Kinect sales peaked again and placed in the top 10 which indicates that Kinect will have demand as long as MS can accomodate. And I can almost guarantee that come this E3, MS will bring down a s**tload of info about more hardcore/casual kinect titles. MS knows the potential of kinect and will definitely capitalise on it both this gen, and probably next gen too by upgrading the hardware. Kinect this gen was more of an experiment than anything, and the experiment was a success.
As for 3rd party, do you really think 3rd parties like Activision and EA will just all of a sudden stop making games for a console that has a 50 million userbase? Even if the PS3 has 10 million more users than the 360 by the end of this gen, they will still make games for both platforms and the newly released Wii 2, because that will give them the maximum profit. And profit is what they are after.
