$1.5 billion would be pretty nasty for the games division (even if to Sony as a whole that's relatively miniscule). At the very least this is a pretty big blow to their image

As a reference the RROD problem cost MS 1 billion, so losing 1.5 billion in a couple of weeks is going to hit hard.
|
MS lost way over $1b
their reserve for RROD problem was itself $1.5b and even then they allocated some more to it after the rrod problem continued
|
From 2007 MS Annual Report:
EDD operating loss increased primarily due to the $1.06 billion Xbox 360 charge.
If you have some other information provide a source. That charge was a setaside to cover repairs and charges for the past and additional warranty charges going forward. As far as I know MS has never reported that they hit the top of the set aside.

they set aside $1.5b for RROD and for extended warranty at first and then when after hardware revisions the problems continued they alloacated some more
it wasn't the expense the the reserve for RROD problem and its warranty, only MS knows how much was used
i don't have time to find a link as i have exams ,google a bit and you will find it or just ignore my post if you don't want to believe
