I thought I read somewhere that they were starting Metroid Prime on N64, and it didnt turn out as well as they hoped so they scrapped it. Nintendo and especially Miyamoto, does this very often. Earthbound 64 comes to mind...

Ya, Mother 64 was for the 64DD which got scrapped alltogether I think..

According to most of the discussion Nintendo's had on the topic, they didn't know how to approach a metroid game on the N64. They weren't sure how to make it a 3d game and were worried a 2d game would sell worse then Super Metroid. Super Metroid was considered a flop by Nintendo (even though it actually sold pretty good), Nintendo just expected much more out of it considering how good the game is. They advertised Super Metroid like crazy and saw very little in returns on the advertising.

Mother 64 for the Nintendo Disc Drive? That would have been awesome. Too bad that Disc Drive failed. Too bad the Super Nintendo Play Station failed. Nintendo could have had a disc-based add-on console, two generations before the Gamecube. Earthbound 64? Was it ever in production?

According to legend, Nintendo did make a Metroid 64, but it was so awesome that Nintendo feared to release it to the masses, and selfishly keep it in the private quarters of Miyamoto's mansion. There he plays it day and night.

A single American copy of the game is rumored to exist, and is the subject behind National Treasure 3. The actual game is said to be locked in the disney vault next to Walt's frozen corpse and the only remaining copy of Disney's Song of the South....least that's what I heard from a friend.
