Forums - Gaming - mafia 2,what went wrong?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_II ----link. So what went wrong with this game? To me,when a game fails to  catch on is more interesting, then when a game is successful and showered with praises. The game's been on the market for a little under 8 months and has sold about 1.8 million between the PS3 and Xbox 360 version. I bought it for $24 and I'm on chapter 10 out of 14. I'm loving the game so far. So why was'nt this game that big of a success? I think it's for a number of reason's. First off the game is pretty straight forward, besides the main story missions, the only things you can do is fix up your car,buy clothes and find playboy cover's and wanted poster's. In today's day and age people just expected more variety for these sand box type of games. If you don't care about the story, then there's no reason to put time into the game. They added DLC and a leaderboard type thing, but again I don't think anybody want's a leaderboard for single player. This is'nt the arcade days. The other thing that went wrong is that 2k games handed off the ps3 version to another company and it was an inferior port. To me this really doesn't matter, but to alot of people it does. So this caused some loss sales right there. So in conclusion,It's a good game in my opinion, but with the lack of any variety outside the story missions, the ps3 port fiasco, and no multiplayer to speak of,this game just did'nt catch on.

The fact that nobody has posted in this thread pretty much said's it all. hehehehe.

I think a lot of people might have gotten their fill from the demo.  I believe it is one of the most rated (as in total number of ratings) demos on PSN.  That is pretty much how I felt after playing it.  Though I did end up picking it up for cheap on Steam.  Granted I still haven't played it.

not made by rockstar.

no hype

people expected grand theft auto with the mafia.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

I just bought it for 9$ used. Haven't played it yet either

You pretty much said everything that could be said in the original post, so there's not much room for discussion. I ran into similar problems in the past, so if you want to get into a debate you better intentionally leave some holes in your first post.

Mafia 2 is a story focused twelve hours long game or something in that range, it's pretty much a once and done affair. $60 for that is a rip-off. The only way it wouldn't be is if it were an exceptional experience, but something like that is rare.

How exceptional does a game have to be to last less than that? Because I feel after that amount of time a game is extending its welcome, certainly if you just look at a single player, because for me, I would prefer a very good and concentrated game, and in the gaps between thsoe I can just go back to FIFA

I bought it on Steam for 7 USD last week lol. Havent played it yet though too busy with work stuff.

mafia 2 is a penguin game

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

I always wanted to play it, but I waited until it was on sale at Amazon for $15 for the Greatest Hit edition with all 3 DLC on the disc. I've heard that it's pretending to be an open world game, but it doesn't have anything to do outside of the story and collection items.
