Forums - Nintendo - Industry Experts Respond to Nintendo HD News

I know he is the "expert" but I find it hard to believe that Patcher thought 2009 was the best time to release a new wii, a time when it was selling like hotcakes and owning that holiday season with 1m plus weekly sales.

This without the major overheads a new console would have brought and still probably not sold any more than the wii at that time or most of last year.

I am kinda surprised that those "experts" are so honest. Let's see what N6 actually is. Has Nintendo learned its lessons from the Wii and increased its output of first party software or will they fall victim to the misbelief that they can court third parties by "fixing" everything that was wrong about the Wii and end up with another Gamecube?

Ooh, ooh, I know! Pick me, pick me!

Okay, do tell. Forum posts don't have restrictive limits like wall posts.

Well, at least I hope you have to say more than just option 1 or option 2.

I do, but I won't be able to type it all out at work, so TBC. I need to get fired. :-/

Croal's is probably the best analysis of the situation; I believe the Wii WAS the biggest seller amongst its peer and I don't remember consumers really clamoring for a new Nintendo console (though they also weren't clamoring for the 3DS, to be fair). I'll wait and see what happens, but I think devs should just accept Nintendo's philosophy because after 4 or 5 years of the same crap it's gone from tiring to boring

Don't worry Nintendo fans.  All of the great third party support is coming to the 3DS, or so I've been told.

Kojima-san is very interested in the 3DS' possibilities.

Didn't he say something very similar about the Wii Remote?

Wii is turning into irrelevancy for third parties, now more than ever. The line up of games is simply catastrophic in terms of quantity and quality. If we add the fact that Nintendo's first party team resources are moving away from the Wii to the 3DS and the unknown, then we can land in the conclusion that they are indeed focusing on the next system.

I will have to agree with one of the jounralist/dev that said that getting a head start might be the only way for them to attract 3rd party devs to their newer console, if Sony and MS are developing very powerful next gen systems. Price was really not an issue for hardcore gamers this gen, as proven by the sales of both the 360 and the PS3 which easily surpass Wii's marketshare. And a price cut for the Wii can only point to the Wii 2 direction.

Nintendo has little to gain from the Wii anymore and if they don't switch tracks soon, then they will be all alone for the rest of the gen and possibly during next gen too. It would be a tragedy for Iwata if things turn 180°. Hopefully he makes the right decisions and when the time is right. They have a lot to learn from their mistakes this gen, a lot.

Some might argue that it's the other way around: many third parties have made themselves irrelevant to the Wii with a string of shoddy and/or unwanted offerings.  No third parties brought AAA offerings to the Wii only to find there was no market for them.

Also, Nintendo has plenty to gain from the Wii.  Releasing a game for a system with an installed-base of approaching 90m is likely to result in far more profit than moving production to a new system as a launch title.

Funny how some people have different standards for sales.

Commenting on Wii sales - which are above 360 and most likely will surpass PS3 by some millions once holidays kick in - they are low and shameful.

Commenting on HD consoles sales - PS3 slightly above the Wii having major software releases, 360 below with decent software too - they are healthy and shinny.

wtf?

For many of the interviewees, there's obviously a lot of confirmation bias involved, yes. But more objectively, it's interesting to note the sales trajectories of the consoles: Wii is declining quickly, while the other two are either stable or actually increasing. The latter two are fairly unprecedented.

At the end everything comes down to numbers and at this stage, all three consoles are performing on par. Yet you get different judgements for all the 3 of them.
