  • Comprehensive Media capabilities

Let the gaming console play games. There's no need to add all the bell and whistles and increase cost when everyone already have the needed media tools or sort.

Personally I agree. But the premise of this thread is that Nintendo is going after a different audience with this aleged new brand. This plus many recent comments from Reggie regarding media, deals with AT&T and movie studios for 3DS, and even stuff mentioned by Iwata such as 3D video recording on the handheld lead me to believe Nintendo has an eye in this direction. Granted I believe it will be a distinct offering in this space, with more of a "gamey" flavor to it as far as interface and presentation...

Also, what do you think of my other points? These are all obviously wild speculation and not dependent on one another.

If you meant Netflix and the likes, then I agree.

It's the physical playbacks, such as DVD and blu-ray that I disagree with.

Anyone that wanted a DVD play already have one.

There's a similar trend going on and I'll just say what I stated there: Nintendo should learns from others just as others learn from them (you can replace "learn " with "copy" if it suits you better) and try to widen their appeal.

They should never give their back to their loyal fans and the products they want though.

I do, my PS3. Having my console as my physical media player is pretty awesome, because I can cut down on devices, so I for one think it's great.

Sounds good to me...

Really, if they just improve graphics, have better 3rd party support and make the online more robust (which they are getting towards now!), they'll have yet another winner.

Not all tese mad, crazy ideas

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

This is something Nintendo actually mentioned last gen. I remember a quote saying they thought one reason for the runaway success of the PS2 was its timing with the mainstream adoption of DVD home video.

Seeing as HDTV adoption has only become widespread enough for Nintendo recently, perhaps they are looking to replicate this pattern with a console that plays Blu-Ray. (this is according to the rumor that it'll have a blu-ray drive).

From their point of view, the PS3 was released too early to offer this to the majority of consumers, which didn't have HDTVs yet, so it could still be a legitimate selling point.

Until you've played it, every game is a system seller!

I think you've pretty much hit the nail on the head. If Nintendo want to be a major player in the "western-core" market, they have to start addressing some of its other dominant forces. It's true that Mario Kart and NSMB are monster franchises, but so are COD and WoW.

I think you mean FFVI remake. No one in their right mind wants an FFVII remake; only Sony fanboys do.

I hope they don't fail to see your logic because it is full of win, in my opinion.
