1. Geohot walked away without any problems m

2. Sony spent over a million dollars trying to prosecute him

3. Sony lost a customer(who bought quite a few PS3s)

yes, Sony definitely won

According to the injunction, the injunction itself applies to every hacker that Geohotz has contact with.

I'm guessing that the subpeona for all those IPs, personal information, etc etc has something to do with the scope of that victory.

A private settlement can't make a ruling for anyone but the parties involved. Nor can they used any of collected data beyond the scope of what the courts allowed, which was only to establish location of alleged activity.

SO what does this mean then?

"ORDER
IT IS HEREBY ORDERED AND ADJUDGED by consent of the Parties that Hotz,
whether as an individual or as a principal, officer, director or employee of any business
entity, and his agents, servants, employees, distributors, suppliers, representatives and all
other persons or entities acting in concert or participation with Hotz who receive notice of
this Judgment
, shall be and hereby are permanently enjoined and restrained from:"

Stamped by the judge.

The key words are "who receive notice of this judgement". To receive a notice you have to be a party directly involved with the case.

And they droppped charges against everybody else.  Likely because it wouldn't of held up anyway.

I thought you were supposed to be studying law Prof?

Hotz sold them out. He had no right to infringe on the rights of people who freely took the information that he legally distributed.

Anon should hit him now too. Burn it all to the ground.

Geohot is officially the internet icon he never imagined to be.

I'm not saying he's a hero, but he had to stand up for what he was doing in what he got caught up in, for the good of all consumers.

He saved his own hide by dealing, which wouldn't be a bad thing normally, but he could have struck a positive blow for consumers' rights

Though i suppose we at least got out of this without precedent being set in Sony's favor either, so it's not as treacherous as it could have been

@Ethomaz

My sidebar lit up awhile back and you were the only new post in the thread. I'm sorry to say but when GT 5 came out, you were really getting on my nerves with your complaining so I blocked you, sorry ^^

That's hurt... you boycotted me . It's fine sometimes I even annoy me.

Thats funny I feel the same. Yourself is right on sometimes. Should move that over to all the time.

And how in your eyes did it look like it?  Could you please name some specific examples?  Or are you just making a general sweeping statement of a guess?

It didn't, because I'm not uninformed... It was directed at MUGENs comment that Geohot came out looking like an idiot(Why didn't you call him on this??)

Maybe it's because the settlement was on March 31th while the Anon attacks were afterwards.  So Anon attacks were not an result of "forcing Sony to settle."  So yes, you were misinformed.  I didn't want to blatanly point that out, but it LOOKS like I had to.

I knew that. I never said they looked like that to me...

I even made the Jackson reference... Let me tell you what I mean by it. See Jackson led his troops into defending an invasion force from the British after the war had ended. No one knew it ended. A little while after Jackson had won word had spread that the war was over. People looked at Jackson's battles and naturally figured since that was the last fight then it was obviously he who had ended the war for them. skyrocketing him into popularity

Now, Anonymous DDoS's several of Sony's sites to the point they are taken offline after Sony settled. Then word spread that Sony has settled, without actually accomplishing anything and achieving none of their goals(really if you think Sony's original goals were to spend millions of dollars to stop one kid, you need to take another look around) after Anonymous' attacks. What do you think it will look like to the people that don't follow it closely on forums?

Sig thanks to Saber! :D

But but what about ..

Should we expect massive drop in PS3 sales next week? Holy crap, Sony better apologize to the mighty hacker community which showed how mighty they are when taking Sony's corporatedick deep in there ass with no lube whatsoever
