Forums - Sales - Kinect Beaten by Move Beaten by Torne in Japan

Who says peripherals don't sell? Not Sony for sure! PlayStation 3's Torne DVR attachment sold 784,000 units last year (through January 2) according to data in a Media Create market report (passed along at this blog).

Torne was released in March of last year. The device connects to your PS3 to give the system digital video recording abilities with a speedy PS3-powered interface.

There were some early hints of success, with some news outlets reporting half a million units by October. Sony has been pushing the product heavily through advertisements, firmware updates and hardware bundles. The 784,000 figure includes bundle sales.

Of course, some may not consider Torne an actual peripheral as it doesn't really have much to do with games. Media Create also provided sales for two more traditional peripherals: Kinect and PlayStation Move. Kinect sold 90,000 units. Move sold 170,000 units. Both figures include bundles.

Media Create also reported sales of 97,442 units for Nintendo's red Mario 25th anniversary Wii system.

already posted and given install bases kinect did pretty good over there...  move not so good.

Given install bases, neither did good. And I'm very happy about that.

It's good to see Torne whooping their asses.

Torne has bugger all to do with gaming... why would it please you?  Its a one hit sale that means zero ongoing revenue for Sony.

I'm surprised it did well over there...  In the UK were everyone already owns at least pne of a similar device Play TV is almost non existent.  I prefer the software solution, such as Sky on xbox in the UK.

Even with all the alternatives, it always pleases me that people are buying very useful devices. Simple ;)

Well I'm looking to get Play TV precisely because I want to unhook myself from the pay TV teat, but still get digital free to air TV (Freeview). All depends on which network gets the Game of Thrones series though. If it's only available through pay TV then I'll just have to keep feeding the vampire. If I can get rid of cable TV then Play TV will pay for itself within 3 months.

Does sky TV on 360 work the same as a regular Sky / MySky set top box?

Torne could possibly be the biggest system seller the PS3 has had in Japan...

which i guess would explain the dismal software sales there....

Torne would be a part of the problem, but I only think there will be what... 1 Million Tornes there. Not all of them will be used on PS3's without games though.

The used game market over in Japan is huge. Explains kinda poor sales for a whole bunch of games.

Anyway. 367,682 PS3's sold in Japan this Year. 2,532,692 PS3 games in Japan sold this Year. It's not been too bad this really.

but when you look at the lifetime sales of most games over there, they are pretty poor.

This is where the huge 2nd hand market comes into affect, along with the point that the PS3 had a very, very slow start and has only really started to come into its stride in the past 2 Years.

Plus, depends on your definition of "poor" really. 3rd parties seem to be happy with the console, they're treating it as if it was the gen leader.
