Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Looking for more companies like Retro

what Tanabe means is that they need more studios with Retro's work ethic and passion. Of course finding talent that rivals Retro is rare, but what Nintendo wants more than anything else are people that think like the various dev teams at Nintendo: they want to make games that are fun and appeal to a wide number of people. Of all the companies in the industry Nintendo seems to be one that wants to garner new talent with fresh ideas instead of just pawning them off to churn out another clone of some franchise.

This is awsome new's. Nintendo searching to expand 2nd party support has me totaly pumped.   I love this direction.

im the type of player that can't play the same game twice in one generation.  I need a company that keep's looking outmarket at new posibilities, not looking in at what has already proven to work.

Go go go

Talent on the level of Retro is rare, so it won't be easy to find similar studios. Next Level Games and Monster Studios are of a more common sort, they aren't able to put out blockbusters, but they do solid work which is ideal for Nintendo's second tier IPs. It certainly wouldn't hurt, if Nintendo and its partners were able to release at least one game of every existing and still relevant IP on each of their systems. Right now, they lack the workforce to do just that.

Bolded for emphasis.

Not that I don't like Rare, but I don't think they could do great things for Nintendo right now, besides  new DKC game. Just look at all the crap they have on the 360.

I'm talking about the old Rare.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

Well, Retro have released some of the best games this gen for Nintendo, and in the past 10 years in general, so obviously they want more...

I say, they should have bought Square, Enix, Capcom and Namco when they had the chance...

But with companies like Mistwalker and Monolith Soft working for them now, as well as the discontinuation of the Touch!! Generations line, it looks like Nintendo are certianly looking to appeal more to the 'Hardcore' Nintendo crowd, and that's a good thing.

So it's obvious they want more developers

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

How about a studio in Europe?  Nintendo haven't had one since RARE left and both Sony and MS have their fair share of them.  Headstrong is the only one that instantly springs to my mind, but I'm sure there are more

also Eurocom, maybe?
They have proven to be able to produce a AAA game in a genre Nintendo cannot, and the sales are definitely there, too.

This is very true, and has also been reflected in numerous Iwata Asks interviews. The best example that comes to mind was the interviews with Team Ninja about Other M where it was said multiple times how both teams were surprised at how similarly they approached game design.

I for one would be excited to see this collaboration continue. I think there also certain teams within Namco, Capcom and Konami that would be good fits to work together with Nintendo.

The type of situation I can imagine in Japan is that of having one or two teams within each major publisher that are dedicated to Nintendo platforms. The ownership could even be shared with N if said companies wanted to reduce risk. In this manner, some of Nintendo's philosophy would also leak out to other Japanese publishers who could apply it on their other games. That could also be a big incentive for them since it would definitely increase sales in the long run...

Totaly.   Actually, as a Nintendo product owner and return costamer I would rather they do that, then go after 3rd party support.

The only reason i see it worth to Nintend to get 3rd party is if they agree to publish there big hits with Nintendo.

All the 3rd party Big hits are already ancored on the X-box or Sony.  So if Nintendo makes there Consule all hard core and they dont get 1 exclusive whats the point?

Finding some studio of Retro`s caliber will be hard. They can make deep games like Metroid, yet make a game for everyone like DKCR - and that`s hard to achieve.
But, at the same time, Retro probably only reached this status with Nintendo`s guidance. So, if Retro could ascend in quality, so can other 2nd party studios.

Nintendo should capitalize on their assets, it will only be on their own benefit.

If you read up on Retro's history then they were quite a mess until about ten years ago... When Nintendo started working with them they had multiple projects in development that were quite mediocre, and at one point Nintendo basically took control of the studio, appointed new management, and canceled everything they had except Metroid...

So yes, it could definitely happen again.

This is definitely something most people don't know.  The retro staff had huge turnover in terms of designers and programmers while still trying to manage multiple projects.  Even the CEO of Retro was exalted from his position in the last year of the first Metroid Prime!

You can read all about it here http://www.n-sider.com/contentview.php?contentid=267&page=1

Not only that, but this happens in many studios today, perhaps not as much, but who knows maybe even more so.  Nintendo doesn't necessarily need to find good people, they just need to find an outside studio that they can have a decent amount of control in.

@gumby_trucker: I remember that. They had this twisted metal kind of game, plus a RPG and some other game if i`m not mistaken. I used the word probably as i didn`t really know how, and to what extent, was the impact of being handled by Nintendo. From recent comments i can see that Retro share`s more Nintendo`s philosophy than they ever did. That`s why i think Nintendo should work closely with other 2nd parties.

@robzo100 : They can mess with any studio they own but first of all, those same studios have to have good, talented people and second, if they lack the means on how to achieve their goals they have to be guided - as Retro was.

Mistwalker isn't owned by them, if I'm not mistaken.

Nope, that's just Monolith Soft, and it was in '07, I think.
