But that's part of the Street Pass and Spot Pass features. And that works when the sytem is closed so you're not using much battery then anyway.

The rEVOLution is not being televised

Well they've been reported as reasons the DSi battery is shorter, so I assumed they would do the same here.
But another reason for a revision would be available methods to make the parts smaller and more efficient (very likely if the system volume picks up fast). Combine that with a stronger battery, and you have damn good reasons to remake the system.
A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Sure, reducing your BOM is always a good thing to do but you can do that with basic revisions. Look how many the PS2 had. 19 or so. But it had just 1 major hardware redesign.

Well then it depends on the PR. The PSP and DS both had revisions sooner due to bad PR, while systems like the NES, PS1, PS2, and Gameboy could wait for major revisions.
On the other hand, the PS1 and PS2 did have disc drive fixes soon, so the battery issue could be a minor revision.

They could sell as an add-on a jacket with a generator driven by a stirling engine using body heat.
They could call it "McGyver 3DS Everlasting Power Source".

The only problems with this is that the regenerative heat exchanger needed and the royalties for the McGyver name would result in making the device a bit too expensive...

That's why I had a plan B to cut at least the royallties cost, and also some of the production costs: they could cut the least hard parts of the stirling engine with "Miracle Blade" knives and call the gadget "Chef Tony 3DS Everlasting Juice". BTW Chef Tony is a close relative of Ron Jeremy and Mario, so he'll surely accord Ninty a special price, or maybe even give his name's use for free if cuz Mario accepts to assist him in a promo for the knives.
| Jumpin said: There is a 2DS available, it is called the DSi, it is a last generation handheld now. I don't think there will be much of a market for a 2D only version of the 3DS system, probably next to nothing; the graphical quality of the games benefits a huge amount from the 3D, and they look fairly bland and lifeless in 2D. The pricing likely won't go down a lot either, as the games are developed to meet certain hardware characteristics, which includes the 800x240 screen, the processor, RAM, etc... Not to mention the development costs - the tech is cheap to reproduce, but the dev costs were probably fairly pricey. Not to mention, creating a non-3D 3DS would be the same as creating a non-HD PS3, it just was never going to happen due to similar reasons to the ones I listed above. |
The 3DS in 2D would not be last gen. After trying the in store demo, the graphics look much better in 2D. While I could see in 3D, I could not keep everything in focus as once, the HUD was at screen level but was blurry because I was looking past the screen.
Droping the 3D screen along with a few other features mentioned would save battery life and costs. A price at around $200 would be a winner.
