Forums - Gaming - Play 3D games and movies on regular non 3D TV's

Details are sketchy but coming in fast...

VIP has released an adapter which allows 60hz TVs, projectors, monitors...etc...to use special shutter glasses and play stereoscopic 3D games.

The adapters are called VIP 3D Displayer and 3D theater and below are the details we know so far:

3D-Theatre: $499.00 (Games, Movies, Satellite/Cable & Internet and 60Hz/120Hz TV/projector)

3D-Displayer: $299.00 (Games and Movies & 60Hz/120Hz TV/projector)

Expected release date is 12th Apr 2011

Surprisingly, the initial impressions are pretty solid.

I am looking forward to trying this first hand. I used an old 85hz CRT monitor for 3D few years ago and I know that it can work fine under 120hz. If it works as good as everyone on AVS forums says it does, I'm trading in my 720p 3D projector for a 2D 1080p Epson 8700 and getting this adapter.

My guess is that 60hz LCD tvs with pixel refresh rate of 6ms will be crap for this. Ghosting and flicker galore...

But DLP tech has a refresh rate 100 times faster than fastest LCDs, so my hope is that projectors work well without ghosting. In any case, I'll post when I get it or get more info.

hmm...interesting. tho i dont know about investing with my tv.

The price tag is a no sale for new buyers.

3D TV don't cost $300-$500 more than its regular counterpart.

For that much money, you may as well buy a new TV unless you already own huge TV.

True, but there are other new markets which may benefit from this. Projectors for example...1080p 2D projectors are 1000 bucks. 3D 1080p ones are currently around 4000.

Also 120 hz 3D PC monitors can't play PS3, 3D bluray devices and 3D cable...but with this adapter they can.

I am mostly interested in projectors as they use DLP chips which have great pixel response time as well us have 85 hz refresh rate, which is better than standard 60 hz.

Would this work with 60Hz projection TV's?

Yes it would. But no one really knows how well it will work on any 60 HZ TV... You would need the adapter and the special 3D glasses from them. People with DLP projectors can use DLP-link glasses which you can buy anywhere these days for less than 100 bucks.

Cool, we just got a new projector put in, and my parents refused to pay for a 3d one, so maybe this will be a way to get some 3d from my PS3

Yeah, could potentially work well.  We are all patiently waiting for feedback on AVS forums... First shippment goes out this week.

While it really doesn't matter for PS3 (since PS3 signal is always 60hz), most DLP projectors out there work at up to 85hz at certain resolutions when using a PC. I am currently on a hunt for one that does 1080p at 85hz...
