Forums - Gaming - 3DS perfectly follows the PS3 path to success

I would like to point out on the issue of price that 3DS is sold at a profit, while PS3 was sold for a very heavy loss even at that excruciating price, therefore even if price *were* a putoff for consumers (and survey says it certainly isn't for now), Nintendo's got more flexibility on the matter than Sony "$200 loss per unit" did.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Ignoring the ridiculous inaccuracies with the PS2 only having sold some 120m at PS3 launch, 3DS not being priced at 2-3x DS, people "pinning their hopes" on games releasing on 3DS within the year (not 2D Mario), neither having underwhelming hardware, Move being far more along the cycle and next to nobody calling backwards compatibility a main feature... Most of these similarities are rather meaningless. PS3 and Wii both end with an "e" sound - does that mean they're gonna sell similarly, :P?

I'm still not convinced that the price of the 3DS is the problem some people make it out to being ...

It is more expensive than Nintendo handhelds have typically been, but it isn't that expensive compared to most portable electronics, there have been other handheld systems that have done well at that price, and even after 6 years on the market people were buying the DS at (roughly) $200. On top of that, I'm still not convinced that the NGP won't be so expensive that it makes $250 suddenly seem like a bargain; after all, if you look at how the exchange rate between the US dollar and Yen has changed over the last 6 years, if they maintained the American price relative to the Japaneese price, the DS would have launched at (roughly) $225 and the PSP would have launched at (roughly) $375. Hypothetically speaking, if the NGP is announced to be $399 lots of people will see $250 as being an affordable system.

Anyway the launch sales are starting to speak for themselves that the 3DS is in fact in higher demand than the PS3 was at launch, the price does need to come down for the long haul however, but overall the 3DS has had one of the best launches ever and some of the most appealing things to non gamers I have shown are in fact the built in games and applications much like Nintendo wanted.

That's a really flawed comparison. Sony had massive production problems and could only supply 200k and 100k units for the American and Japanese launch, respectively. If the 3DS didn't top that, oh my gosh. The PS3's European launch didn't suffer from supply problems and was around 600k units, so around 150k units higher than the 3DS launch.

Which is in of itself flawed when Sony has better ways to supply many more European countries

Also the sales were not around 600k it was 527k by VGC numbers so less than 100k difference in others.

Also another good point brought up, that I forgot to mention, was the profit on the system at launch

I have to disagree with the price not being a put off as for me it is just like it was for the PSP. Theirs other factors like being even less inclined to pay that much for added things I dont want. No must haves atm though that might change ofcourse as time goes on. Anyways, nothing will get me to pay $250 for it. I will just wait untill its under 200 and has 5-10plus games I want.

This is actually true, forgot the name of the effect but kids use it all the time when wanting toys, "you can get me this 20 dollar toy!" "thats too much" "how about this one?" *pricetag 40 dollars* "you know that 20 dollar toy doesn't look so bad now"

But to counter your statement the NGP actually has to HAVE a price first for that effect to happen.

I don't disagree ...

I just think that the main influence the NGP is having on this discussion at this point in time is that a lot of people are not being realistic with their expectations; and this is reflecting on their opinion of the 3DS. To a certain extent, this reminds me of watching countless Playstation fans bash the XBox 360 for being $400 because they were certain that the PS3 wouldn't cost more than $300.

Indeed, honestly the PSP is the closest thing to compare it to, 250 v 250 at launch, both have multiple applications, and both are handhelds.

The only difference in 2004 vs 2011 is expectations, people actually do expect to pay more now-a-days with recession and weaker US dollar vs 2004.  I do agree some people are putting TOO MUCH weight into the price tag as it still isn't something people see as outragous when they pay over that for a MP3 and video player, but in the case of 3DS they can get a game, MP3, and video player in 3D for about the same amount and well 3D does have it's appeal by the looks of it since people will pay more to watch even a meh movie like Avatar in 3D

I see alot of people saying it has no good launch games.

What you dont know is.

All you need with your 3DS right now is a Racer. 3D makes racing games 100 times better

Its fun as ballz

Don't say "a racer", because it could trick people into buying Asphalt 3D. Ridge Racer 3D is what you should recommend.

This!  Seriously Asphalt 3D looks rough though funny enough... not as bad as Crusin' or Need for Speed HP on Wii lol

I'm about 10% into Ridge Racer 3D, enjoying it very much, I'm probably going to start focusing on it since I'm two missions away from 100% in Pilotwings (Yes Diamond Class) and after I beat RR3D I'll cycle back to Street Fighter IV till I get something else I want like Steel Diver...

The moral of this story is that the system has good launch titles, launch titles are notorious for being bad, but games like Pilotwings and Street Fighter IV are excellent even by non launch standards, and Ridge Racer is a more than competent racer plus it shows off the 3D effect really well.  Also the casuals I show the system off too get hooked on the installed games/apps be it AR, Face Raiders, or just 3D photos, overall strong titles to launch with, that cover various segments.
