Forums - Gaming - 3DS perfectly follows the PS3 path to success

3DS launch price / DS launch price = 250/150 = 1.66667

PS3 launch price vs PS2 launch price = 600/300 = 2

3DS launch price / DS price @ 3DS launch = 250/129 = 1.93

PS3 launch price/PS2 price @ PS3 launch = 600/129 afaik = 4.65

3DS launch price / Cheapest last gen competitor's price @ 3DS launch = 300/129 = 1.93

PS3 launch price/Cheapest last gen competitor's price @ PS3 launch = 600/100 = 6

So when you said 2-3 for the 3DS you meant 1.666667 - 1.93

and when you said 2-3 for the PS3 you meant 2-6

I shan't respond to the rest of your post while it contains blatant falsehoods.

Pretty much what I was thinking.

The 3DS is ripe for disruption. Compare 3DS to PS3.

Follows up a record-smashing console that sold 145 million units worldwide.

Focus is on visual upgrade to HD.
Focus is on visual upgrade to 3D.

The system costs $600, which is 2 to 3 times what previous consoles were sold for.

Game prices are jacked up to $60 instead of the long standard $50 because of higher development costs.
Game prices are jacked up to $40 instead of the long standard $30 because of higher development costs.

Despite PS2 soundly beating the XBox by being a games-first device, it dives straight into competition with XBox 360 to chase a dream of being a "convergent," all-inclusive "set top box."
Despite DS soundly beating the PSP by being a games-first device, it dives straight into competition with NGP to chase a dream of being a "convergent," all-inclusive "entertainment device."

Early adopters are pinning their hopes on future games that we know very little about, and probably won't come out for years, like Final Fantasy.

The hardware itself is so underwhelming yet expensive that many people decide right from launch to wait for the inevitable Slim model.
The hardware itself is so underwhelming yet expensive that many people decide right from launch to wait for the inevitable Lite model.

Tacked-on, Wii-aping, impractical motion controls are added just so they can claim it's not only about graphics.
Ditto.

Treats AR games with no content as a significant, game-changing product.
Ditto.

The overall games lineup and direction of the console is so uninspiring that apologists seriously talk about backwards compatibility as a major feature.
Ditto.

It's all exactly like the PS3, except for this:

The failure of PS3 due to Wii's emergence leads to PlayStation creator Ken Kutaragi's downfall.
The appearance of success due to weak competition leads to DS visionary Satoru Iwata's continued hubris.

Dude. Seriously.

The biggest argument against everything that you've said is:

The PS3 launched after X360 and Wii.

The 3DS launches before NGP.

''The hardware itself is so underwhelming yet expensive that many people decide right from launch to wait for the inevitable Slim model.''

WTF!!!?

The PS3 was a MONSTER when it launched: Built in Wifi. Connect up to 7Bluetooth devices. It had Linux. CD/DVD/BluRay player. Plug in your hard drive and watch movies...

Don't think people are going to take to kindly to this thread.

Your missing spending $250 on a device for something you dont want just like all those people who didnt want to pay for the  Blu Ray on the PS3.

@Albion:Is that because of the 3D?

@OP: Ps3 hardware was expensive. Sony coudn't doom much about the price at first. Allegedly, the 3DS harware is not so in the worst case scenario, the 3DS is an upgraded DS and it can have a low price. Not a huge deal for Nintendo. Other than that, fun thread. Boo@the people who take it too seriously.

The only thing I agree with this OP is that PS3 was a failure in profit and expanding its brand. Its good for gamers but bad for SONY.

And I think the 3DS was a necessary evil(?)/blunder so Nintendo can gain 3rd party support for the 3DS which may help for the next home console. Nintendo thinking they can win a gaming generation without 3rd party seems more of a hubris than thinking they need 3rd party. I'm not arguing about "quality" 3rd party games but the mindset that Nintendo thinks, because of the Wii, they can beat the whole industry without 3rd party because it received poor quality (in sales and "gamer's" quality). The 3DS focus on power is to regain 3rd party and develop better relations with them, hopefully, although the DS already recieved good 3rd party support.

This good relation may pay off for the next Nintendo home console.

Wake me when the 3DS has a competitor release a new device at $100 with full support of 3rd parties and a strong first party as well, on top of doing something none of its competitors do.

You do not have the right to never be offended.

The PS3 is a failure?

Yes, one of the biggest failures since xbox. People should stop looking at hardware sales, and look at ROI....and Ps3 ROI isn't good. Given it still has 2-5 more years to make a positive ROI.

Also I knew this would happen, so predictable, even if this is really just grasphing for straws.
