Aside that, while getting a star in SMG2 I was think about editing my post, but it seems you just can't wait to answer. Anyways:
While Mario Kart will definitly sell hardware, Nintendo just can't always depend on some sequel of Mario Kart or 2D Mario. Those games might be released only once every generation (especially Mario Kart), so they need to create new hardware sellers. My memory is weak now, but I hardly think Zelda with tacked-on 3D, a 3D Mario who Nintendo think by adding "nostalgia" things like the Racoon suit will make it sell (since according to the same, was the reason for NSMB Wii doing well on Americas and Japan but not in Europe)or a sequel of Paper Mario will do this job (that doesn't mean I won't like/buy them).
