I don't know why people think Japan sales are going to dry up, there may be a dip but its not like people just stop buying stuff after a catastrophe.

Consumers gonna consume.

Exactly,it's not like consoles will be next to 0 in the upcoming numbers for Japan.I personally expect the PS3 to be between 10k-15k then.

yeah PS3 lower than 10000 not gonna happen, reason for console sales down just because so many games delayed

What games are getting delayed in Japan?

eh, even without japan ps3 still barely won this week (statistical tie and all that stuff), i dont think the tsunami will end sonys dominance.

well....

if it wasn't for the Japan earthquake,

Sony would be in really good shape, and MS would be in a bit of trouble

I mean the PS3 wouldn't even need a price cut, it's already outselling the 360 by quite a margin in weekly WW hardware, and closing the WW total hardware gap.

However....

because of the earthquake, Japan will probably plummet to near abysmal sales for all consoles, for quite a while

So.....

the 360 will probably be tied with the PS3 or slightly above the PS3 in weekly WW hardware for quite some time

actually, if it wasn't for Kinect, MS would be in serious trouble....thank God for Kinect

eventually, the PS3 sales will come back in Japan, but I wonder if it will be at pre-earthquake levels....

Before the earthquake/tsunami, the PS3 was doing quite well in weekly worldwide hardware, surprising a lot of people.  And MS has already played all it's cards already, with Kinect.  MS could cut it's price, but Sony would match any price cuts.  But really, Sony didn't need a price cut.  The PS3 outsold the 360 every week this year in WW hardware, except for one week.

But that was before the earthquake/tsunami....

Oh well....

Yakuza, Motorstorm, MvC 3 DLC... Disaster Report 4 cancelled.

The 3DS is taking over from being d0med from the Wii

Anyway, good PS3, DS and to a lesser degree Wii sales

Yeah, thank god for the wii beating the 360, because if people claim that Wii is d00med, then it comes naturally that the 360 is already dead (extrapolating data FTW!)

OT:

Nice sales for the top 3, surprised at the 3DS drop-off (could be supply issues?), expect it to be bumped up when it launches WW big time anyway

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

Pokemon BW unnecessarily low. 3DS unnecessarily low. Disappointing week.

So.. lets get some perspective again, I dont understand why people have such short memorties.

No console here is doing amazingly.

YOY

360 UP 3% (5000)

PS3 DOWN 21% (50,000)

Wii DOWN 36% (96,000)

This gen has peaked...  Yep.

Nahh another ps3 price drop and after an amazing boom in sales i think it would sit comfortably  50-70k up this time next year.

Nice PS3 HW. DS doing well right up to 3DS launch in the rest of the world. PS3 growing it's global 2011 lead, but I think Wii and Kinect will own the holidays again, so for PS3 to take 2011 as the top console it's got to build a pretty big lead during the slower sales times of the year. Tough to do. I'm not sure anyone can predict what price cuts will do this year given all 3 consoles will probably cut prices. In theory PS3 should see the biggest boost being the most expensive console, but who know.

Not too impressed with LBP2 numbers considering it's HEAVILY discounted, well here at least it is (selling for 33% less than the normal new release price in most retailers).

Are my eyes deceiving me or did PS3 get a boost in Aussie/NZ from Dragon Age II? The only region outside Japan where PS3 is up week on week (10%) and DAII's the only thing to launch. Or did Aussie have some special PS3 deals that week?

Bulletstorm putting up good numbers on 360, but it's failing miserably on PS3. KZ3 has really killed it, which is a shame. Speaking of which dropping 43% between Wk2 and 3 is not too shabby for KZ3.

I'm quite amazed that Kinect sales are so heavily skewed towards the Americas. 80K for Americas, 26K for the rest of the world. Does this suggest Kinect is mostly selling to new console buyers, and not so much to existing 360 owners? Across EMEAA Kinect's sales were 50% of 360 sales, in Americas Kinect's sales were 71% of 360 sales. I guess that means reasonable Kinect sales to the 360 base in America's, but minmal sales to the base in EMEAA.

Dragon Age II almost 700K across the 3 platforms. That's pretty decent. And I think proportionally it's similar to Dragon Age: Origins. Though DA:O's start in EMEAA was a bit wierd in that it's first 2 weeks had almost no sales and only in week 3 did it start selling reasonable numbers. So perhaps factoring in that oddity DA II has actually done slightly worse than DA:O on PS3. Even though DA II's style suits consoles more.

So the weekly gap between the PS3 and 360 widens to 30k. With Japan not being much of a factor next week, I expect things to go back heavily in 360's favor for a while.

Plus lets think about how many PS3's were probably destroyed in Japan, for all we know the PS3 could see an influx of sales in Japan in a few weeks due to replacement consoles.

People who lost their PS3's in the distast probably also lost their house, car and a bunch of other stuff. I don't expect insurance re-buys of PS3's (Wii's, DS's and PSP's) to have a material effect on weekly sales as people aren't all going to go out a replace their consoles within a few weeks of each other. The re-buys will happen over a period of several months / year because people will mostly replace their household items as they get their living situations into more permanent arrangements.

I think you could expect a short term surge in handheld sales (including things like iPod/Pads), because people stuck in shelters and other cramped, shared accomodations will look to handheld devices as things to pass the time/take them away from the horrors of reality for a while. Gaming is a legitimate coping strategy.

Best wishes to the people of Japan.
