What word best describes the 3DS's 3D?
Awesome! -You have to see it to believe it.
There is a 'wow' factor when playing the 3DS. While it might not be that much of a mind blowing experience, it is one that brings a smile. As soon as I turned the 3D on, I began to feel a weird sensation to my eyes. The flat 2D screen suddenly expanded beyond its borders. Objects looked further away and it was easy to judge depth.
The only game that I was allowed to play was Pilotwings. I went to Best Buy of course. They have 3DS stations now, in case you didn't know! (YES RUN!)
Pilotwings to me felt more like a demo that demonstrates the system's 3D. For me, personally, it didn't feel like a game that warranted a buy as a full fledged title. If you played Wii Sports Resort, I don't really see a benefit besides 3D. After a while it becomes a boring game yet enjoyable (hmm lol). There is only one setting. The flying game in Resort was fun because of the Wii motion plus, this title lacks that kind of experience.
I had no trouble whatsoever with the 3D. I am kind of blind, it took me a few seconds to adjust to the 3D. There is nothing to worry about. Unlike some journalist make you believe, the sweet spot is so easy to come back to. It's not hard to lose it, but that would depend on what kind of game you play. I moved the system around, so rest assured that the sweet spot is indeed sweet. Besides depth and perception, this 3D also has pop up objects. When you turn the plane side to side it creates a little wave of air that pops out at you. It was a neat addition. With the jet pack as you tilt, his shinny helmet seemed like it spilled off the screen!
Overall, I am satisfied. I see so much potential. 3D without glasses is what it seems like. As soon as I went to 2D mode, it felt like the magic went away. To me it adds enough to a game and it's a far more enjoyable experience in 3D. Of course this varies from person to person. My bro-in-law saw the 3D but got a headache quickly. But it depends on you! Go see it to believe it!
