Okay so I'm about an hour and a half in and I'm really enjoying things so far.
First and foremost, it is quite possibly the best looking DS title to date, beating out the likes of Final Fantasy and Nintendos own titles. They perefectly recreate the areas of the original game on the DS which is quite impressive to say the least, not sure if EVERY area in the game is here but so far it is. The only drawback is that there are "doors" for the lack of a better term that section things off (for loading) but the load times are just about nil so they don't get in the way and it streams together like the original areas.
Controls? Well they spank the pants off the PS2 and Wii if you ask me even with the lack of camera control (it has fixed angles and follows behind Chibi Ammy) and only D pad with no analog. Basically the painting is spot on, MUCH better than the PS2 painting, and a step up from the Wii IR controls, it was simply how the paintbrush was meant to be implimented.
Mechanics are mostly the same. Draw the sun, the sun appears, paint, oh look that bridge is fixed! One new power you get early on in the game is the ability to control this kid like you would Princess Zelda in Spirit Tracks. Making for a few new puzzles in the game unlike the original.
My biggest fear right now is this will be a straight up rehash, many of the same characters and plots are being reused just now with a couple of new ones added in to make it "fresh", but honestly even if it is, I won't be mad, it's simply great to play this on the DS. Also for those that disliked Zelda on the DS with the touch only controls, do yourself a favor and pick this bad boy up, it's 5 dollars cheaper, follows the same formula of Zelda, and is set up to be more like the open field 3D zeldas AKA the console Zeldas.

if it reaches 1m I'm certain Capcom would be blown away and estatic that Okami found it's base.
