This generation didn't have two markets.
It was always Sony VS Microsoft vs Nintendo in the home console market. Sony and Microsoft don't share profits or anything for that matter.
It only started being called HD twins vs Nintendo when third partys were called out for not developing for the market leader. For years third party developerds kept telling us ""Its all about the market leader!"" when why they didn't develop for Nintendo systems (which they were right) and when that changed they stuck to there guns, called the Wii a fad and continued on. Then the HD twins excuse was born when the Wii was breaking all sales records and theere were no third party blockbusters to be seen.
We all know what happened next, they supported the PSP, PS3, 360 more over the Wii. Nintendo doesn't do business like Sony and Microsoft, we know Microsoft and Sony throw down the big bucks for publishing, advertisement and development fees, while Nintendo....well just thinks its enough they have a system to develop for. Nintendo can do that because they have big enough to support themselves. Which they did.
It could of being better this gen. The Wii could of being the console where developers could experiment and create new ideas for less. But Nintendo only looks out for itself. Since the HD consoles cost a lot to develop only ideas that will make back profit need to be made, so the sequal driven, FPS saturation, multi platform begun. The 3DS continues this trend when the first videos we get are of Capcom developers going ""Did you see those graphics bitch?"" and the majority of announcements are PORTS or sequals or console games.
While this all happens we waste our time fighting over sales when we already know its already decided. Nintendo won the console race, Microsoft spent billions and still just snagged second, Sony lost the market leadership to get Blu ray on the shelves, thats it, neither gained absolute control over the industry and thats good, so lets not waste our time over things we can't control and just play some team fortress 2....on PC oh course...with hats.
