Forums - General - Microsoft kicks off effort to rid the world of Internet Explorer 6

Friends don't let friends use IE at all.

I'm happy for my friends to use Firefox or Chrome, and grudgingly accept that some of them see some attraction in Opera, but not IE, and definitely not IE6.

That's like grudgingly accepting that some of your friends see the attraction in Amber Heard.

An even better invention was alt tabbing tabs in the browser itself :) Ctrl-tab ftw :DD

I think that was invented at the same time

Well with over 50K employees in the U.S. alone, I'm afraid the company I work for is a contributor to that 2.9%, at least until the end of March when we'll be finally upgrading to IE8. Then I can start posting on here from work again! *Small Victories*

I didn't find out about it until later :/

Hm, I hated Netscape, but switched to Mozilla as soon as it was out. Not sure if 1.0 had tabs anymore... but think it did, that was around 2002 or something.

For those wondering about the history of tabbed browsing the first usable implementation dates back to 1997 in an Internet explorer shell known as NetCaptor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NetCaptor later 2000 it was first added as an extension to the Mozilla browser (pre firefox) it wasn't until 2001 that it became a standard feature in the Mozilla browser Opera also added tabbed browsing around the same time.

Yay for computing history

This is actually one of the reasons I feel "sorry" (for lack of a better term) for Microsoft and think that their negative reputation is not entirely earned. You’d (probably) be surprised by how often you will come across someone who bashes Microsoft for being so insecure and when you look at their system you will see that they’re still running IE 6, haven’t done a security update on their computer since they bought it 5 years ago, their anti-virus software reached end of life years ago and they haven’t received a virus definition update since then, and their system is loaded with crap because every time they come across a accept/reject screen they accept everything without ever reading what it says.

I'd be willing to bet most people that hate Microsoft only do it because they think that's what they're supposed to do.

If you ask 10 people that say they hate Windows, IE, or Microsoft in general why they hate their products, nine of them probably won't give you an actual answer, just vague it sucks or it's broken type of comments.  They won't be able to say why they themselves hate Microsoft.

I hear that thrown around a lot.  However when I ever ask someone who says they dislike IE why they do, they will give me a valid reason.  The people that wouldn't be able to give me a reason, are those that are still using it even if they are unsatisfied because they have absolutely no idea about anything regarding technology.  Just like the people who were sold Vista with their 1Gb RAM and insufficient CPU laptops and just thought computers being that slow was normal.

The excuse that is long dead is security, all browsers are pretty secure these days.  Unless you are yourself doing something stupid or negligent you will be fine whatever you use.

I'm just curious, those that do give you a reason why they hate IE, what version are they using?

Companies take years to upgrade and I'd presume it's mainly offices that are causing this large number. They just don't update.

As a web developer, I go out of my way to tell people that any errors in IE6 (which they are probably viewing the website in) will not be fixed as we no longer support this. Of course it rarely occurs that people accept this as a response as my client services people just start getting moaned at so I have to fix it and it means I just have to do more work because someone just didn't update. The sooner we get rid of it the better. It's old and redundent.

Hmm, pie.

Microsoft brought this on themselves. They intentionally created IE6 to "break" the internet. They ignored standards in a purposeful move to make developers either code a site for IE or code one for Netscape. That's why the thing is so bloody mind-wracking for web designers. It goes off in its own direction and is intentionally non-compliant for many basic, standardized features in CSS and PHP. The end result is that because of their intentional hamstringing of the Internet and their short-sighted methodology (add in an automatic update system and this problem goes away in 2005) caused this to be a far larger mess than it ever needed to be.

As a full-time web designer and developer, it will take me a LONG TIME before I forgive MS for adding years of frustration and hassle to my job for no reason other than greed and incompetence.
