Forums - General - Microsoft kicks off effort to rid the world of Internet Explorer 6

"Friends don't let friends use Internet Explorer 6." A quote from any random web developer over the past ten years? Nope, that's from Microsoft itself, and it's featured on the Internet Explorer 6 Countdown site that the company just launched today. As you can see above, the site also includes statistics on IE6 use around the world (China is apparently the biggest offender by a wide margin), as well as information about how you can "join the cause" and educate others about the perils of using such a horrible, outdated web browser.

Ignoring the baffling fact that people are using ANY version of IE...the fact that they're using a browser that doesn't support TABS is something that really worries me about the future of mankind

Now, if you excuse me, I need to do a service to my country and kill 4.5% of the Internet users in it

Friends don't let friends use browser not called Firefox 4 and Chrome.

This post is a disaster.

This is actually one of the reasons I feel "sorry" (for lack of a better term) for Microsoft and think that their negative reputation is not entirely earned. You’d (probably) be surprised by how often you will come across someone who bashes Microsoft for being so insecure and when you look at their system you will see that they’re still running IE 6, haven’t done a security update on their computer since they bought it 5 years ago, their anti-virus software reached end of life years ago and they haven’t received a virus definition update since then, and their system is loaded with crap because every time they come across a accept/reject screen they accept everything without ever reading what it says.

I've hated IE since the days of Netscape. I went from Netscape to Opera to Firefox and now use a mix of Opera, Firefox and Chrome (mostly Opera)... but even I'll admit that IE9 is an immense improvement over past versions and makes it a viable alternative to other browsers on its own merits of performance and stability. My main issue with IE9 is that the area where open tabs are displayed is incredibly small and I usually have a few dozen open at any given time

My only issue is the lack of right-click options. Chrome and Firefox let you do quite a bit more with the right click now than IE still does

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Opera 11 ftw. IE just sucks in general, I think the reason why the IE6 is commonly used in the somewhat developing countries would be the internet cafes, I've been to a few in UK and those still have IE6 ._., I don't think they can be bothered to update them.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

Ummm tabs haven't been around that long.

You couldn't live without them by the sounds of things but all the same you carried on quite happily for ever year you were alive before about, what, 3-4 years ago?...

Most people don't even use them. (crazy people!)

Netscape navigator was an awful browser.

Friends who pester people into using software they use are irritating. :)
