Forums - Nintendo - Iwata Asks: 3DS, Steel Diver, didn't think Zelda would be "mainstream"

Miyamoto:

I didn't think that genre would be seen as something so mainstream. I really didn't expect the response I got when I first made The Legend of Zelda. A world of swords and magic really wasn't considered mainstream at the time.

On Steel Diver:

Miyamoto:

The project was on hold, and about two years after the Nintendo DS system was released, one of the teams finally had time to work on it. That's when we resumed its development as a Nintendo DS title. But right as we were making it, the features of Nintendo 3DS system started to get fixed. So while we were developing we thought, "This would work so much better on the Nintendo 3DS system!" It's basically a side-scrolling submarine game where you would move through a three-dimensional body of water. We thought it would look so much prettier if there was depth to it and the wide screen.

So, Steel Diver will be the next Zelda, huh?

/adds Steel Diver to shopping list

back then i wouldnt think of it being that succesful either.

It may have seemed out of place at the time in Japan, but Legend, Willow and Labrynth were all around that time in the US which I would imagine helped push fantasy a lot.

Miyamoto is an idiot confirmed.

So shooting torpedoes out of a submarine is more mainstream? Who the fuck wants to play that?

The only part of Steel Diver I played today was the periscope one, for the 10 minutes i played (could'nt the find the last two subs damn it!!!). It was very cool, but i need to see more.

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Another classic Iwata Asks, I enjoy these little conversations. I also find it fun to think that everyone inside Nintendo is just walking around StreetPassing evryone. No one has charm like Nintendo.

Edit: yay for accidently posting! :D

They may have something of a cult following NOWADAYS  but at the time none of these films were huge boxoffice drawcards (in fact Legend and Labyrinth were out and out BOMBS, and WILLOW fared only slightly better in comparison!) so I doubt they'd be seen as a huge contributing factor towards making fantasy more mainstream or paving the way for Zelda's mainstream success...

Given the lack of success of these 3 films, it could be said that Miyamoto was right and fantasy was in fact VERY unpopular at that point in time.

I wonder if Miyamoto knows that girls like playing Zelda games. ;/
