Forums - Gaming - Homefront breaks THQ pre-order records, Kaos Studios' future remains cloudy

THQ’s Danny Bilson has revealed that upcoming blaster Homefront has become the most pre-ordered title in the publishing powerhouse’s entire history.

Speaking during a chinwag with Eurogamer, Bilson said that the FPS has nabbed a whopping 200,000 pre-sales in the US alone, though noted the possibility of Kaos Studios shutting up shop and having staff relocate to Montreal still lingers in the air.

"I tell them [Kaos] the more successful a game is, the better the economics are for the franchise, and that will help to influence what we do," commented Bilson. "So we haven't made any decisions at the moment. That's the truth. We're going to look at how it goes. We don't want to relocate people just to relocate people.”

"A lot of it has to do with how successful it is and how strong that core team comes out on the other side," he explained. "I love those guys. I've worked very closely with them on this game for years. There's nothing disrespectful going on at all. We're trying to do what's best for everyone."

Despite this, David Votypka, general manager at Kaos, has taken a glass-half-full approach to joining club Montreal.

"With the opening of the THQ Montreal studio the goal has always been to find a way to utilise that studio in future Kaos projects," he told Develop.

"Seeing as New York is not the most inexpensive location to develop games, utilising Montreal one way or another is understandable,” he added. "We've submitted various shared development scenarios to THQ, each have different pros, cons, and different costs.”

Odd seeing as this is only Kaos' second game but I guess all publishers are trying to cut costs. Montreal seems to be a popular base for developers, already got EA and Ubisoft there which are making some pretty decent titles. Canada is general seems to be a popular location.

hmmm...still on the fence about this game....did like the movie red dawn...maybe i'll try it out

oh, come on THQ, you don't disgruntle your devs BEFORE the release of the game, or they might release it for you, as torrent!

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

I might give Homefront a rental to see if I enjoy it.  If I do enjoy the multiplayer portion of it then it's possible that I will buy it.

I still have a huge backlog to play before i get new games.

It is more to do with appeal of military shooters actually. Medal of Honour got 5.5 million sales and counting. Sad for the developer (Kaos) though.

Would be a shame to see Kaos go, but chances are the key people will be relocated to Montreal if the games a hit and a sequel is made. Are THQ doing a Ubisoft Montreal with their Montreal studio and making it like, some huge, epic warehouse staffing thousands of people? 0_o.

Impressive pre-orders too, really didn't think Homefront had gained that much traction. Hope to see it go well for THQ.
