Forums - Nintendo - Iwata: Wii Hasn't Reached Limit Yet (plus 3DS talk)

The Wii's problem isn't that it cannot offer surprises anymore, its problem is that nobody wants to create them. Beyond that, it's not like every piece of software needs to surprise the audience, making a rock solid game does the job well enough most of the time too. But that is also something nobody really wants to do anymore.

The Wii is a console ahead of its time.

You killed the thread now no one has anything else to add -_-

Nah Rol didn't kill it theirs just not much to say.

The Wii selling 7-million a year is not something to be braging about per say especially since that number is a decrease from the prior year and this year will probably be less then last. I think Iwata is simply not playing his cards we'll hear about the new console at E3.

Remember right before DS:Lite was released Reggie said the same week Iwata announced the DS:Lite that the DS:Lite was a rumour and that Nintendo was not releasing one. Fact of the matter is Nintendo likes to be tight lipped about their consoles until the perfect time.

With the 3DS launch in North America Imminent why release info on the next gen home platform this early? Of course Nintendo is going to hold off till E3, now I don't expect a huge unvieling at E3, its possible but I think a modest mention may be made much like Nintendo did at E3 2005.

As for expanding the market from DS to 3DS, its possible that the 3DS could sell more then DS, but it would be foolish for Nintendo to expect it too. Alot could go wrong and alot could happen in the next 5-7 years which could effect the 3DS's sales.Nintendo would be fairly arrogant to expect superior sales to the DS (The most successful handheld to date).

Well as of right now there is nothing I am excited for other then maybe conduit and Zelda. There is NOTHING coming out that I know of. I even asked people at gamestop and they said only Zelda off the top of there head. So how is the Wii not a thing in the past. The last few weeks on here you can see sales of the Wii going down and down and down. Developers almost said fuck it and moved on already. It sucked that there are only a had full of good wii games coming to the Wii, but the only people we can blame is the Wii (nintendo) and how they did not fix a few things over the years inorder to make people happy about the system and get devs to develop something.

Well, as we've seen with Wii one game can carry the thing to great sales for up to a year, so one game can change things I suppose.  Maybe they have some more games before the end they're not telling.

It doesn't matter if it hasn't reached its limit. It's not getting nor is it going to get much  more third party support (worth mentioning).

Nintendo can't keep pushing the console on mostly first-party alone. They have to release a successor that caters to third party wants and needs, then they can leave it for a ten year life cycle for all I care.

But maybe Iwata is being serious...maybe there is no new console coming soon. Like, say, late 2012.

Right Iwata? *Nudge, Nudge*   *Wink Wink*

Many people say basically the same thing : that Nintendo should release a successor to the Wii as soon as they can because it will never have a decent third party support. But I don't see how releasing a new console now would change that: why would developers work on a new Nintendo console with an inexistant installed base rather than on the Wii? In order to have a good third party support this new console would need to have basically the same power than the PS360 in order to have ports. But the problem is that when the much more powerful next home consoles from Sony and MS will be released in few years, developers will probably once again stop developping for the Nintendo console and start making more graphically advanced software for PS4 and 720. So releasing a new console now doesn't make sense for Nintendo imo. This is as stupid as the Pachter's Wii HD idea.

On the other hand the Wii has a huge installed base, it only lacks some HCG. The situation is evolving favorably imo as more and more third party games are selling very well on the sysem like EM, COD; BO,  Golden Eye or Sonic Colors last year. And the more they will manage to attract more (hardcore) gamers the more these kind of third party successes will be common. So instead of releasing a new console early Nintendo should try to maintain the Wii as long as they can, releasing more hardcore games probably and games that third party can "duplicate" -like RPGs or even FPS- in order to create a more viable market for all kind of content. Once they will have a more decent third party support, when they will have proved to third parties that they can be successful on their system, then it will be the right time to release another console. And if they can't do that at least they should wait for the next Sony and MS consoles before launching the Wii2 because rushing things could only hurt them in the long term.

Meh, just give us XenoBlade and The Last Story already! C'mon!!!

No publisher/dev will start all of a sudden caring about the Wii. The system is dead to third parties. I just read that not a single publisher was interested in publishing Super Meat Boy for the Wii, thus it got cancelled. On the other hand it was released for PC and 360. That's simply 1 example, but there are countless circumstances where devs badmouth or honestly express their disinterest or dislike for the Wii. Take a look at the big Japanese 3rd party publishers (Capcom, Namco Bandai, Konami, Sega, Square-Enix, Tecmo Koei) and notice how outside DQX (which is not coming out in a long time) there's no other game coming up (Conduit 2 but that's not even semi big). The system is dead to 3rd party Japanese publishers and on the verge of dying here in the West as well, where there's basically nothing coming up this year either.

Tell me why would Nintendo be interested in keeping a dead console alive, when their existing installed base isn't active anymore. It would be a much better idea to transfer all their remaining innovative ideas to their next console. And also try and fix their relations with 3rd party devs, because it's at an all time low concerning their home console and by next gen I'm pretty sure the console will be totally ignored by a big chunck of the industry if this isn't fixed. The point is, if Nintendo wants to make a console that fits their needs only, then fine, they will keep on selling monstruous quantities of their own software and then those 3rd parties that do manage to adapt to their strategy will somehow do well. But the rest of the industry isn't too keen on adapting to the rules of other company, so ignoring Nintendo is their strategy. Nintendo HAS to make a console with a big dose of innovation but also one that is attractive for 3rd parties to work with. They have the Wii brand alive, I think it's best for them to launch a new system with the Wii brand before it's too late, before the Wii dies a miserable death. They can do a lot to provide third paties a great platform, just like they are doing with 3DS. If they wait more than a year now then I'll be ready to say that Nintendo will be ignored and their next home console dead on arrival with 3rd party support. They are playing a very dangerous game, but I know Nintendo is going to annunce their new console really soon. You got to notice that most of their 1st party published games aren't even made by 1st or 2nd party devs anymore. Nintendo is using their internal teams to create 3DS and Wii 2 software. That also explains the big drought Wii is going through now and the decreasing quality of their 1st party published SW.

Fullfilled Prophecies

I love my Wii and am glad I bought it first.

It has had many great games and my family has had an enormous amount of fun with it.

However, last year and what I know and think is being released this year has been underwhelming. Not from a Nintendo publishing point of view as that is always constant with a few hits a year. But, the 3rd party scene is nonexistant.

While Nintendo won't comment for obvious reasons yet, it seems obvious to me that 2012 will bring its successor as its support, as Rol mentioned, is gone.

However, with 3DS launching now, I don't think we'll hear anything about it until the shows during late fall at the earliest and a full disclosure next GDC/E3 (2012).

I just hope they don't hold up ZeldaSS like they did TP.

@ trestres

And you think all of a sudden developpers are going to care about another Nintendo console if even a smashing success like the Wii hasn't been able to be third party friendly? Why should they be interested by this new console if it's not just for releasing some easy ports and stop doing that the moment the PS4 and 720 will be launched? I don't say that the third party support is good for the Wii right now. It's bad especially in Japan but please explain me how a new console would magically change that. The 3DS has a really good support from third party because the DS has shown to them that they could be successful on a Nintendo handheld but I hope that you certainly don't expect the same kind of support for a Nintendo new console after the Wii's third party debacle.Speaking for myself I certainly don't.

The only way to make the third party devs work on their console is to prove them that they can be successful on it. Everything else is bullshit and to obtain that you have to create a viable market for their games. Just Dance is a success because Nintendo has released games like WS, WSR, Wii Fit, which have created a market... But now after releasing 2D and 3D Mario games, DKCR, Kirby... there is also a market for platform games as well like the good sales of EM and Sonic have proven. That's how you create a market viable for third parties. What they should do imo is just releasing more traditional games like RPGs or FPS because third parties know how to create those games. That's what they seem to be trying to do right now wth the releases of games like Xenoblade, TLS, Zelda, Pandora Tower and DQX will help for sure. That's the right thing to do to improve third party support and having a big installed base can only help.
