Some parents are going to be concerned about buying them for their kids with the warnings about eye damage.

See this is what I like about Iwata. They way he worded his quote.

He used 'wants' instead of 'is going to'

He's not sounding cocky or anything. And when you constantly hear multiple devs and publishers saying "blah blah blah is going to be the best game" or "blah blah blah game is the best multiplayer".

Thats really price dependant and how well NGP performs against the 3DS. Nintendo can run with the ball with the DS because it constantly outsells PSP WW and has a rather large marketshare. The ball is in Nintendo's court... will it be a slam dunk?

I don't know why people think this'll be so difficult. This is DS except they already have a 140m userbase to dig into, they have a very mass market-able feature, they already have NSMB, Nintendogs, Brain Age and newly popular Mario Kart and they have an 85m home console userbase to steal from and on top of that, they can still come up with awesome new IPs like they did with DS. Sure, the iOS devices could pose a threat (like Iwata, I don't think that's gonna happen), but, other than that, the 3DS is in a pretty good position to outsell the DS.

What CEO isn't going to say they want their new product to sell more then the old.  I can't believe this is even a topic (not that I'm mad or anything).  This is normal banter for the release of any new product.

Depends on if they successfully deliver an experience made somewhat available on smartphones, crush the NGP by taking Monster Hunter exclusivity, and effectively releasing first party evergreens in an efficeint release schedule.

Of course it's possible, but Nintendo sure has their work cut out for them if they want to top DS.

I honestly don't think it can be done. Little kids want a smartphone or itouch these days, and a suprising amount of parents are willing to buy them one. The nintendo ds was a much cheaper option for a gift. The 3ds currently very expencive. The DS had the benefit of being extremly innovative, which greatly helped sales once software took advantage of that. The big new feature of the 3ds is 3d which the theaters have milked into oblivion by now. I think it will sell really well but will not approach the ds's lifetime sales, especially considering the ds will still be the console of choice for those on a budget and will still sell millions for years.
