As usual its the time of week when Michael Pachter makes his most recent predicitions and answers gamers questions. This week while answering a gamers question he predicts that next gen consoles will cost over 800$. Now of course the rule of thumb is if Pachter says something the opposite usually happens or is true.

So do you think Sony Microsoft or Nintendo will price their consoles higher or as high as 800$?

Personally Nintendo has since the NES never gone much higher then 250$ I don't expect Nintendo to change this pattern of pricing. Microsoft has priced their consoles high I remember buying my Elite for 599$ at launch. But would Microsoft really price a console drastically higher then that. Sony who's PS3 launched at 600$ was also critisized for its price.

Is Pachter right would Nintendo , Sony or Microsoft have the gull to charge 800+ dollars for the next gen systems? With THQ claiming next gen games would cost around 100$ a retail could gaming actually become as expensive as people are predicting?

I predict consoles will launch is a price as low at $100 next gen. Which is the crazier prediction :o?

I don't think Sony has anything ridiculously expensive to trojan horse into their userbase this time, MS wouldn't be that stupid and Nintendo doesn't price stuff that high.

So I'm gonna go with no.

With the NGP thought to be >300... it's possible.

I wouldn't bet on it though.  $600 is the higehst i'd think.

Either way i'll just be buying cheap steam deals till consoles get around $200.

If I had discovered steam first, i'd probably own nothing but my PSP.

Might of bought Kinect and a 360.  Or would later on if I had extra money, but I probably wouldn't.  Probably would of been spent on various other stuff.

I think it is possible, but I doubt it will unless we see significant inflation ...

The reason I don't entirely discount it is that both Microsoft and Sony released consoles for more than people were traditionally willing to pay and (between the two of them) I don't think you can say that the market really punished them for it. With this in mind, I could see how a company might believe that they could get away with selling a console for $800 and assume that customers would be willing to wait for price drops.

PS4 could launch at $500. Sony are going to stick with Blu-ray because downloadable games and other content will become a much bigger part of the industry. So they won't have a new physical medium with a high entry price to push. So I can't see them stuffing the PS4 with $500 worth of new processing capacity. I suspect a 1TB HDD, or 300GB SSD won't be too expensive either.

The more I watch Pach Attack the more I realise that he is a really intelligent guy with a good rational for most of his predictions. I'm sorry but what the OP claims he said is a complete fabrication. He never predicted that consoles would cost $800, he said that if the next set of consoles did something special they 'could' cost $800plus . It was a 'high end of the scale' of what they could cost figure.

Didn't the ps3 launch at $699?

Anyway, no f'ing way. Sony learned it's lesson, microsoft has enough buisness sense not to do that.. and nintendo's main thing for the longest time has been pricing their stuff low.
