Forums - Sales Discussion - Chart: System Launch Prices w/inflation

I really find the whole "compare prices of every system w/ inflation" argument or point utterly useless. It really doesn't matter, nor prove anything. Why?

As time goes on for electronics in any arena, prices become cheaper, not just because of Moore's law, but because of economics of the item(s). A great example is the PC market. Despite the fact that incomes, and such are far higher than when the PC launched, prices have dropped ALOT.

Example: In 1995 I bought a middle-of-the-road computer with monitor (a good one) and printer (again, a good one) for $2500 + Tax. In 2002, I bought a middle of the road computer for $650 w/o printer but included a decent monitor.

In 1991, a "good" home PC was around $3g, with cheapos being around $1k or more (except for the C64, mind you). Video game systems should be cheaper (at launch) than they currently are. It's not like theres a small niche market for video gaming anymore. Last Gen, almost 190m units will be sold of the "big 3".

This leads me to make a statement: All systems this cycle are overpriced dramatically. The Wii is a POS at $250 including a game (NES was $199 w/ game). Nintendo is making $100 per system in the US. That's a HUUUUUUUUUUGE markup.

Despite this, I still feel that both the 360 and PS3 are overpriced as well. Not because of specs like the Wii is, but in general, no gaming system is really worth anything over mass-market pricing ($300). I didn't pay $400 for my 360 at launch, and I never would. I paid $100 since I sold the 2nd one I had for a profit.

Stickball in ur sense there its quite useless, but in the sense of how many people can afford such a console its not so useless, and there is a limit as to how cheap a console can be no matter how low tech the parts are (u wouldnt see them selling consoles for 50-100 dollars as ur pc comparison woudl suggest). Also if they were to make the new systems any cheaper then they would not be any different to the old systems, the only way to make a console cheaper and more powerful in a new generation that would require waiting a longer time then they currently do between consoles.

First off. My links work. just remove the %A0 at the end of the URL.

second. You could buy a GameCube for 130$

Add my 40$ of parts, and then spend 70$ to put a wiimote/nunchuck on it. (hey, this is all retail prices)

I'm still lower than 250$ How does that make 250$ a good value.

I'm not saying the PS3 isnt too expensive for the mass market. However in 2 years it wont be. In 2 years it will produce the most beautiful graphics, and it will cost 300-400$.RIght around the 299 price point you mention.

When I bash the Wii in price. I think 250$ is a ripoff. 200$ is for nintendo to make some profit. 150$ for them to break even, and 100$ to sell at a loss like microsoft/sony do on launch.

The PS3 really only costs about 500$ to produce. I would say in 1 year it will drop down to about 300, and in 2 years about 200. Giveing in 2 years most likely a near 300$ PS3. And then they might re-release the 20gb PS3 for like 250$

The PS3 is too expensive at 600$ (not that it isnt a good value, just overall too expensive)
The 360 is too expensive at 400$ (a better value, but still a little too high)
The Wii is a HORRIBLE value at 250$ (that is like http://www.bluehippopc.com ) You are paying 5x what it's worth. I could build me a computer with what the Wii has for about 300$. (and it would produce better graphics)

EDIT: Do not fill that out and do that. It is a scam. They dont display information on their stuff anymore obviously. So do NOT fill that out and get a computer from them. They sell a ~400$ computer for ~2000$.

$130+$40+$70=$240. How is $10 more a bad value? And you are ignoring the fact that the Wii has more advanced processing, enough to justify extra money to make it compared to the GC right now.

I won't add the cost of an extra nunchuk and wii remote, simply because by doing so  I should also add the cost of a Sixaxis to the PS3's total anyhow.

Therefore, by your assumptions, the Wii is a GameCube plus the motion stuff: 130+40$ in parts = 170; 250 at retail means Nintendo is making $80 per console.

"The PS3 really only costs about 500$ to produce."

Therefore, you are saying  Sony makes 99$ per console.

So Nintendo is overcharging consumers by making 80 bucks a pop, while Sony is being nice and fair by making 99 bucks a pop?

"I would say in 1 year it will drop down to about 300, and in 2 years about 200. Giveing in 2 years most likely a near 300$ PS3. And then they might re-release the 20gb PS3 for like 250$ The PS3 is too expensive at 600$"

Let's see what I can say about the Wii:

"I would say in 1 year it will drop down to about 200, and in 2 years about 150. Giveing [sic] in 2 years most likely a near 150$ Wii."

Man, I hope you guys never buy a coffee ...

"I can pick up the grounds to make 20 pots of coffee for $5 so you're screwing me over charging me $1 for a cup"

Actually, I grind my own beans, thank you - can't see myself paying 4 bucks for a iced mocha every time I visit my local barista, and I drink on average 10 cups a day...

Man, learn to add. First you say Wii components cost  $150, as you yourself said that's what Nintendo needs to sell the console at to break even.

So... how the hell is $150 5x less than $250?

Put another way: I don't think anyone here (apart from the eBayers during the post-launch frenzy) paid $750 (5x) for their Wii at retail.

You must be confused with another console... oh yeah... it's the PS3 that's selling at those prices...

And Kwaad "forgot" to include a GC game in that total.
