Even a month ago this seemed unlikely, but if you look a the current state of wii software sales you find:
1 | Wii Sports | Nintendo | 22,890 | 8.05 | 15.14m
2 | Wii Play | Nintendo | 11,670 | 6.88 | 7.57m
3 | The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess | Nintendo | 14,257 | 8.61 | 4.14m
4 | Mario Party 8 | Nintendo | 15,684 | 7.57 | 3.46m
5 | Super Mario Galaxy | Nintendo | 44,754 | 8.75 | 3.01m
6 | Wario Ware: Smooth Moves | Nintendo | 3,311 | 7.55 | 2.02m
7 | Super Paper Mario | Nintendo | 8,691 | 8.18 | 1.83m
8 | Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games | Sega | 9,995 | 7.75 | 1.42m
9 | Big Brain Academy: Wii Degree | Nintendo | 4,323 | 7.28 | 1.41m
10 | Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition | Capcom | 32,084 | 8.31 | 1.18m
11 | Rayman Raving Rabbids | Ubisoft | 3,944 | 7.66 | 1.17m
12 | Mario Strikers Charged | Nintendo | 10,355 | 8.16 | 1.04m
13 | Red Steel | Ubisoft | 3,125 | 6.84 | 1.03m
14 | Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock | RedOctane | 4,532 | 8.04 | 0.99m
15 | Metroid Prime 3: Corruption | Nintendo | 31,777 | 8.29 | 0.94m |
15 titles currently over 1 million (Or very close at least) and 5 third party titles also!
Now, considering these titles to be guaranteed million sellers:
22 | Wii Fit | Nintendo | 5,139 | 7.84 | 0.52m |
25 | Link's Crossbow Training | Nintendo | 1,746 | 7.86 | 0.49m |
We are already at 17.
Now, there are a about six or seven games that have the potential to sell through, and could creep to a million LTD (I am not claiming these titles have any chance this year, but looking at the bigger picture, it would be great if 21 games released in the Wii's first year reached that magical million barrier).
16 | Sonic and the Secret Rings | Sega | 4,474 | 7.75 | 0.79m
17 | Pokemon Battle Revolution | Nintendo | 4,016 | 7.61 | 0.77m |
20 | Cooking Mama: Cook Off | Taito | 1,559 | 6.50 | 0.55m
21 | MySims | EA | 2,345 | 7.56 | 0.55m |
24 | Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles | Capcom | 10,494 | 8.12 | 0.50m |
29 | Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 | Ubisoft | 2,276 | 8.04 | 0.38m
30 | High School Musical: Sing It! | Disney | 429 | 7.50 | 0.36m |
38 | Carnival Games | Global Star Software | 2,148 | 7.19 | 0.32m |
I realize there are 25 games there, but I do not expect all of these to reach the million mark (just trying to get include some other options to spur discussion).
First off, Sonic and the Secret rings. Can it sell an additional 200k lifetime? I think so, given the popularity of Sonic in Europe, and the possible sales it may pick up as a result of Mario and Sonic and the eventual pricecut. Look for more sales from this one in Europe, and it is currently tracking above the sonic GC games and rush (both million plus) http://www.vgchartz.com/swlaunch.php?reg1=All&game1=Sonic+and+the+Secret+Rings+-+Wii®2=All&game2=Sonic+Rush+-+DS®3=All&game3=Sonic+Adventure+2+Battle+-+GC&weeks=100
Others from this list I think wil make it will be Resident Evil, UC (as it is currently tracking above RE4 Wii and RedSteel, and will probably get a boost from those million plus zappers)
Carnival Games I believe will be a slow burner to a million, as it is already at 500k shipped and has shown no signs of slowing down in either the US or europe. it will be a VERY slow crawl but I think it will get there (provided Take2 doesn't release a sequel to cannibalize sales).
Out of the rest of the list the only one I see making the million sold will be Rayman Raving Rabbids 2, as it is tracking currently above Red Steel and the original Rabbids, and will replace the Rabbids 1 sales that have continued along at a good clip for the last year.
I would argue that cooking mama may make it, but the release of the sequel will cannibalize sales.
Almost forgot:
4 | Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga | LucasArts | 1,232 | 8.00 | 0.23m |
Tracking around the same numbers as the first two, which were million sellers (or very close) on the cube. Also I believe the game may be slightly undertracked, as it sold 180k in November NPD alone.
So, that would make 22 Wii million sellers, with 9 third party games hiting the mark! Impressive, but can it actually happen?
Any thoughts, Ideas? (Sorry 360 and PS3 owners, I don't have either console)
