Japan's gaming sales are as strong as ever, I look back a sales through the years for the month of Dec. they are about double what they were in the "glory" days of the SNES(The DS has a HUGE affect on that though)

It is just their taste are changing, America's is much different now too.

If a platform doesn't sell software in the top#30 - it doesn't matter what % of them are made by 3rd-party devs.

Early in its life - the DS was all Ninty. It took a couple of years for 3rd-party devs to jump on board.

The Wii is following exactly the same pattern - in 2 years time, you'll see 60% of titles selling well on it are from 3rd-party devs.

...

God help the competition when Ninty solve the production issues.

The Wii has just passed the Gamecubes lifetime sales in about 1 year vs 5 for the GC. The DS is now trailing the PS2's lifetime total by 200k. It will pass the PS2 next week. GG I guess. Japan is officially the Mushroom Kingdom.

Also by looking at these numbers I think its safe to say the PS2 is starting to pass into the next life. Less and less prominent in the top 50 software and its doing 18k at Christmas. Its starting to fade and should be all but gone outside of a few releases next year. Time for the rest of the Japanese developers to make their move. Its DS or Wii atm.

Not necessarily, momentums have a tendancy to shift and while the wii had a chance to deliver possibly a knockout this holiday season the shortages prevented it. It could prove to be decisive in the long term.
