Xbox would charge more for the internet.  And there would be a lot fewer good games, seeing as Sony's are amongst the best this gen.

Also, if PS2 failed, Microsoft wouldn't be in videogames.

I don't know about that one. I think if PS1 failed then MS wouldn't be in video games, but the gap between the release of PS2 and Xbox is only a year, unless the first Xbox was designed in a year I don't think that was the case, but I don't see how that sentence contributes to the topic :S

I just felt like some were belittling the company's contributuon to videogames, which is silly at this point.  Admittedly, it was off point a bit.  But PS1 or PS2, the point remains the same.  And I think the two top points are vaild, if I think of more I'll add later lol.

Well to be fair, PS3 was released last this generation, so to say the least, nothing else would have happened if it didn't release :p. Changing hardware will affect how the older games will be played and the people who brought the consoles from start would get shafted, the only major contribution is BluRay but that's as a whole and not gaming as it does not apply to Wii and 360.
Not undermining PS3 as I would like to have one when funds do permit me to get one, but without it the only factor that would change is the lack of competition on the market and lack of diversity that the PS3 library offers. Seeing as PS3 was released last, if it does have any impact on the videogame industry we will see it next gen, maybe MS's answer to BluRay or something like that. Quite frankly BluRay just rapes normal DVD in the face.

P.S To those citing the console revisions, those have been around for a while now.

I don't really disagree with anything, but I wanted to mention that PS3 being in third was dictated by nothing more than releasing third, as we've come to see.  Had it released first, it would just be the reverse.  But these are just daydreams lol.

P.S.  My My second sentence TOTALLY just rhymed.  Points to me.

Yeah I think the fact that it released third and was considerably more expensive than the direct competitor at the time dictated poor sales performance until later in it's life cycle, when the price gap is considerably less. I think Wii would have raped either way :p

I think the Wii was different enough that it would have won off the novelty regardless (I'm not saying it was a "novelty", I mean it was new and fresh).  The only chance it could have been beaten is if the PS3 released before it and was cheaper (meaning not 600, not necessarily as cheap as the Wii).  Then everything would have been in line for a momentum continuation from last gen.  The price is really what screwed Sony, just about entirely.

Welll if PS3 died it would mean that there wasn't a market for hardcore gaming... meaing games like Heavy Rain, Uncharted, Gran Turismo and Killzone failed to attract an audience. If these games failed to attract an audience then all similar games would also fail to attract an audience. This would mean that X360 would have done a lot worse then it did and may be close to failing itself. The gaming industry would shift, and gamers like myself would have less intersting games to play.

I don't know, games on X360 that can be classed as "hardcore" have done reasonably well, Halo 3 is the top selling game, second only to MW2 and it's expansion, ODST pulled something like 5.6M, which is reasonable considering all it added was 5-6 hour campaign. I don't think it shaped hardcore market but it did provide some interesting and innovative alternatives that can provide new and fresh experiences. Gears is also a good example as both gears have sold 6m apiece, with the 3rd looking to outperform the previous iterations, also majority of the multiplat games sold better on X360 before, but now PS3 is catching up and selling them on par or even higher in some cases - multiplat games of established games such as resident evil etc.

Regardless of the definition of "hardcore" the games on both X360 and PS3 are fairly similar. If the PS3 couldnt attract customers then it would make sense that neither would the X360.

Eh, before this generation gamers were ALWAYS similar with each other, didn't stop things like the Dreamcast from bombing.

But this is the playstation brand we are talking about.

If a hardcore system from that brand had failed it would signal a huge change in market trends as gamers ignored the brand's attraction and hardcore games.

I mean Dreamcast was coming off the SEGA Saturn LOLOLOL

Er? The Sega Saturn was actually pretty popular?  Espiecally in Japan?  Thanks to this guy.

The Dreamcast failed because of the anger at the Saturn being canceled so fast in fact.

Exactly the dreamcast had other reasons for its failure related to its brand strength and consumer mindshare.

But if you have the next in line to the most successful console of all time flopping despite also getting good hardcore games then there's a change in the market. And Xbox 360 would probably have foundered with PS3 leaving Wii as the saviour!

In Shio land PC would dominate then.

I don't think the ps3 was in the same  position as the sega saturn or dreamcast  sega had the habbit of cancelling things way to fast and dropping support sony still had some credibity so It would have never failed.

Like... the N64?

Seriously it wouldn't be as big a thing as you expect.  All it would of took is 360 being a bit more popular in Japan and Europe.  If they got FF13 exclusive instead of Sony and Forza would of been called better then GT... that's all it would of took.

@Kasz

The N64 failed? No it didn't. And to be perfectly honest I still believe the PS1 games library destroyed N64's so that sales gap isn't surprising for me.

Our ideas of "failed" seem to be clearly different. I see failed as selling less than 5 Million.

The PS1 library dominated the N64's.  It just so happens that some of the most famous and recognizable games ever were on N64, so it barely seems like it lost.  But numbers don't lie, it was decimated.  But not a failure, only lost by comparison.  I mean, PS1 had some notables lol.  FF7, MGS, Symphony, Crash, Tomb Raider....

P.S. One of my guilty favorites was L.A.P.D. Future Cop. Best multiplayer EVER.
