Forums - General - Book Thread: VGChartz gotta start readin'!

Just went on a book buying spree at Barnes and Noble today

Bought Harry Potter book 4 and book 7. As I mentioned in my last post, I'm working my way through the series, and somehow I never owned book 4 (must have rented from a library), and have never read book 7, so got that as well.

I also bought The Gathering Storm, which is the 12th book of the Wheel of Time. I don't intend on reading it for a long time, but since I was at Barnes and Noble, figured I might as well pick it up.

I also purchased the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson.

These 6 books combined cost like $64 after tax. This is a little more than I would have liked to pay, and I probably could have saved $15 by purchasing on Amazon instead, but sometimes I don't mind giving actual bookstores some business.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

Finished The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. I found it intricate and absorbing, I read through it quickly. Going to take a break before I move on to the rest of the trilogy though.

Now reading What the Dog Saw by Malcom Gladwell. It is a non-fiction book that collects articles written by the author for the New Yorker over the years. I have read all of his previous books which were fascinating and informative.

Also reading a few The Simpsons Comics and starting the first volume of a manga I've read in ages called Biomega.

Currently reading The Count of Montecristo. It's really long, but very entertaining!

I tried reading The Three Musketeers, but I just couldn't get into it. Don't like Dumas's writing style. I wonder if this is any better. The story itself seemed more interesting.

I loved Musketeers; if you couldn't get into it, don't even think of touching The Hunchback of Notre Dame. That book drove me to distraction. Hated it.

I started reading Hunchback a while back, and actully somewhat liked it (despite my general dislike of the period in which the story takes place). I should finish reading it eventually (note: Hunchback was written by Victor Hugo, not Alexandre Dumas).

I knew I had the wrong name. I'm bad with U names.

Listen.

It starts off fine and ends fine but he spends what feels like 80 pages describing the architecture of France as seen from above. It's painful.

Yes, it's sadly how people wrote back then. Seems quite filler, and it was in many cases. Back then, and author would get paid by the page, so the more pages, the more money. Spending so much time on filler content usually paid off (literally).

I'm reading A Song of Ice and Fire series as I became a fan of the TV show. Sadly, I'm still at book 1 because of my commitments.

Up til now it's been really interesting and the story is well told.  It's quite long but I wouldn't call it full of fillers.
