Kutaragi's comments echo a recent Phil Harrison interview in which he commented: "We believe that the PS3 will be the place where our users play games, watch films, browse the Web, and use other computer functions. The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC." The combined executive comments appear to signify a change in marketing tactics for the company, who may have always had this scenario in mind, but are pushing it much more strongly following a somewhat mixed E3 showing from a PR perspective.

Kowen, come on, are we going to use PR to define it?

I'm looking at how the online gaming runs. It's not nearly as open (while secure at the same time) as the myriads of PC online games (dedicated servers, server browsing lists, the host's priveleges of kicking and blacklisting people from games, etc.), and with this hack and the ability of getting users banned indirectly and even unbanning themselves, PSN is pretty much compromised unless Sony actually figure something out.

So, to rephrase: The PS3 is not a PC when it comes to how the online gaming network runs.

Yeah, I worded it poorly. Should've clarified.

In remarks made to Japanese website Impress Watch, and translated byconsumer website Beyond3D, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Ken Kutaragi has commented in more detail on the concept that the PlayStation 3 is a computer, rather than a game console.

Kutaragi pointedly commented of the next-gen console, which is due to launch this November at dual price points of $499 and $599 in North America: "We don't say it's a game console (*laugh*) - PlayStation 3 is clearly a computer, unlike the PlayStations [released] so far."

He went on to outline a scenario where many parts of the PS3 were upgradable, much more like a PC, noting: "Since PS3 is a computer, there are no "models" but "configurations"", and continuing (though talking in the theoretical): "I think it's okay to release a [extended PS3] configuration every year". It's clear from the comments that Sony is indicating that it will be possible to upgrade hard drives and perhaps even other components easily.

The Sony CEO gave another example in the interview: "As PS3 is a computer... it also wants to evolve. We'll want to upgrade the HDD size very soon - if new standards appear on the PC, we will want to support them. We may want the [Blu-ray] drive to [have a writable version upgrade]." He then tempered his comments: "Well, BD may not develop like that, though." But extensibility is what Sony is stressing that you get for the price of a PS3, nonetheless.

The PS2 was a computer as well. It was just not a PC. However, like the guy says, you do not require a PC, but the PS3 is a computer.

The poster whom you replied says " The PS3 is not a PC!". This article proves its a computer, and has functions close to a PC, which will make one not require a PC.

Try again.

No big deal. This thread needed some funniness anyway.

You don't have the right to hack or pirate PS3 just because you bought a PS3.

I get so angry cos of these thiefs in this thread.

For the love of gaming we all must hunt down and roast the hackers and everyone who supports them.

F*ck this kid.

Don't give a rat's a*s about him. He's whining like a little kid now. "Oh pleaaz helpz meee!" Wow, man up to your own actions! You went against Sony's EULA and fell into the grey area of U.S. Law pretaining to hacking, but you definitely pointed against your favor when you gave the codes away to EVERYONE!

If you hacked it yourself, respect. If you helped others to hack, thats illegal IMHO.

Go take the punishment like a real man.

For all the legit gamers on this site that gave money to him. Wow, you guys are really buying into this aren't you?

And your point is....

I still have an original Atari (NOT 2600) VCS (Video Computer System) that was originally made in Sunnyville, CA (a true American made console, unline the Xbox and Xbox 360.)  Wanna see a picture of it with its manufacturing label with my mug in the picture of it to prove it?  And since when did you bend over forward to Sony PR?

This whole thing is just stupid, isn't geohots the one who tried to hack psn via linux and the reason it was taken down and you can do whatever you want with your console but psn and distribution of hacks is another thing, if he used the hacks for personal use and not spammed it on the internet none of this would of happened and where the hell is that homebrew what this has all been for?

I was only messin', lightening the mood.

some pleople in here need to calm down, if anything its them who are making this part of the console war.

I will admit I was rather annoyed by the whole ordeal when I first responded.

But it's cool, in hindsight, I can see the funny side to it all.
