Gamerscore covers both bases for me. It may seem superficial,but it shows the volume of games you play and, given the proper scrutiny, your gaming prowess.

I have a PS3, but I rarely play it. I haven't switched it on since GoW3 and don't intend on doing so again until UC3. The exact same reasoning can be applied to trophies, personally I see very little difference between the two and peoples preference is clearly driven by which console they game on the most, which your final paragraph gives a clear indication.
