This mostly makes sense...I just don't buy Mortal Kombat that high. It's burned us all in the past. Are they really that certain this one won't underperform?

I dunno I played the new Mortal Kombat and it was pretty good. It was also Midway's biggest and most sucessful franchise. I don't think people will be to dissapointed, though I am suprised that so many people are excited for it. I wonder if it will be more successful then the last few crappy titles in the series.

Cool. Didn't mean to imply the game isn't good, just suprised to hear it called "recession proof" when Midway and the last few Mortal Kombat's have not faired so well.

LISTEN TO THE FIRST WORLD PODCAST REAL GAMERS, REAL AWESOME

Based on the index, it appears sony games aren't really recession proof. When compared to others that is.

I know a good amount of people who would only conisder buying the 3DS at launch because they will have Black and White to hold them until more games come out.

DS has an amazing Q1 lineup actually, probably even the best of any console in terms of exclusives.  Especially for RPGs... backwards compatibility should definitely help 3DS in the early going.  It really is the new PS2. ;)

Yeah, and just like PS2 dominance, this type of handheld dominance may never happen again. hehe  ;)

I meant after DS!  lmao   I think it'll have a slightly tougher time than DS, but who the hell knows.  People thought the home console war was over 2 years ago. lol

I dunno, everyone's a whole lot more excited about and bullish on 3DS upfront than they were DS.  People forget, but DS really struggled upfront... the platform was routinely selling less than GBA even, there was nothing interesting on the software front for months, it was pretty dire.  DS really didn't turn things around until about a year later when the Lite came, and was buoyed by casual oriented 'non-games' (Nintendogs, Brain-Age, Big Brain Academy) and rock solid Nintendo franchise debuts (Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing WW, New Super Mario Bros).

Likewise, people today are alot more skeptical of and hesistant about NGP's fortunes than they were PSP.  If anything, I'd say NGP's going to have a tougher time than last gen, and 3DS a far easier one, at least in the early going...

Hmm this is true.  But I think the caution is mostly on the gamers, the devs seem to really like the NGP.  I really do think the two thumbsticks will have a big impact, naive or not.   What I think will break it for me is how well the NGP can appeal to the Nintendogs folks, it looks like they're gonna give it a solid attempt.

Also, your example at least shows that you never know what will happen.  lol

P.S. I think Japan will be a very interesting battleground for these two.

Could we see a mid-term scenario where 3DS struggles terribly hard and NGP under-performs badly outside Japan? We know that Western industry and media hates portable consoles and they are constantly pushing Apple and mobile games. They'd love to see 3DS and NGP going out of business, as with Wii, I hope they fail miserably again.
