Will 3DS Top PS2's North American First Day Sales Record?

Yes 100 55.56%

On October 26, 2000 Sony far surpassed all launch records in North America with the biggest first day sales revenue ever in the history of entertainment.  This of course was the full category revenue launch (consoles, games and peripherals) of the Playstation 2, topping $250 million in its first 24 hours.

Of course first day sales are not necessarily indicative of sustained success, as Sega proved with the Dreamcast launch at $97 million, the previous record holder, but a record is still a record, and that’s what this thread is about.  In fact to this day the only first day launch bigger than the PS2 in North America was Call of Duty: Black Ops; $360m in both NA and the UK, with 5.6m copies sold; 1.4m of which were sold in the UK leaving 4.2m sold in NA, slightly surpassing Sony’s $250m.  By comparison, Modern Warfare 2 made $310m for both regions, with 4.7m copies sold; 1.23m in the UK leaving 3.47 in NA, slightly less than Sony’s record.

In any case, the Playstation 2 definitely owns console/system launches in NA, so the question is:  Will the Nintendo 3DS’s North American full category launch on March 27th top Sony’s $250 million record with the Playstation 2?  My guess is no, simply due to the absence of a Mario or Zelda title at launch, which would provide the added revenue needed to top it.

I'm not sure of the exact numbers but given that the 3DS is initially going to be in fairly short supply i'm going to have to say no.

thats kinda hard to gauge but rol made some good estimates idk though.

What was it? 2.5m for the West? I find it hard to believe that Europe would account for more than 50% so lowest would be 1.25m 3DSs for 4 days including March 27. I wouldn't be shocked to see FW top 1m then, which would be enough already.

i don't understand... what's the point to compare with first day sales? hardware life time total sales is more important correct

So that's one million 3DSes needing to be sold on the first day to match the PS2 figures. Of course this accounts for the $250 million in hardware revenue only.

500k 3DS systems being sold would require 2.5m $50 games being sold with them to reach the $250 million figure, an attach rate of five games per system. 750k 3DSes need 1.25m games to go along with them, certainly a more realistic ratio.

Now the question is will that many 3DS units be available at launch and if yes, will they actually sell out within the first 24 hours?

Good points, Rol.  If they can indeed sell even close to 1m day one, they've probably got it in the bag.  However if it doesn't sell out immediately and it's dependent upon software to make up the difference, that's the wild card.

Nintendogs/Cats and Street Fighter will likely be the biggest sellers, and neither of those will sell units on day one like a new SMB would.

Certainly, but we would have to wait 6-7 years to have that discusssion, this is something was can talk about now.

Precisely.

This thread is only about 3DS' ability to dethrone PS2's first day sales record.

According to this article, it's about 1.6m for NA, presumably all available for launch day.
