“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

I suggest a port to 3DS at this point. Handhelds are what sell the most in japan now...

Depends on the ROM size. The cards are 2GB, which is impressive, but TLS might be way too big for that. Otherwise I agree that the market for them is better on those in Japan.

Im pretty sure that the Rom sizes (or cartidge, whatever they are called now) can go up to 8 GB. Shouldnt be a problem.

Personally, I'd be more surprised if he made a multiplatform game, since most of his other games have been exclusives.

I was only 10 at the time, so maybe my memory is a little hazy, but I don't remember Nintendo doing that much to promote FF1 in Japan (I don't know about in America).  Afterall, the game was a new IP from an unkown company that was going bankrupt.  Not exactly something to invest hefty marketing costs into.  Also, I watched quite a bit of TV at that age, and I can't remember seeing one commercial on FF1.  Also, it only sold 400K copies because that's all that was made.  They were initially only going to ship 200K copies, but Sakaguchi convinced them to double that.

You remembered right.  The first FF game was hardly promoted at all.  In fact, there was very little hype surrounding its release and most people thought that it would be a commercial failure because it looked like a poor DQ clone and it seemed like a last ditch effort from a down and out company trying to make some cash before it goes under.  So the general public didn't really take the game seriously until after its release when people actually played the game and word of mouth started going around that the game was actually pretty good.

Up to doesn't mean it can easily happen now. Cart costs would be way too high at this point.

I don't think the comparisons with Blue Dragon really do TLS any favors.

The Wii userbase is actually 50 times larger than the 360 was when Blue Dragon launched.  Blue Dragon also boosted hardware sales from 4,460 to 37,821.  Userbase doesn't mean as much when they get larger, but the 360 base was so tiny you really couldn't have expected much better for Blue Dragon.

It also had pretty decent legs throughout the holiday season, so it'll be fairly tough for TLS to beat its total sales.

Or it could be that the appeal of these games really is that small. Look at the sales of new IP RPGs in Japan, and it bears that out.

We need him on HD multiplats... I don't think he PS3 alone can deliver the sales he needs... heck, do it on PS3/360/NGP...

He won't, he detests Ken Kutaragi and has vowed to not support the console Ken founded (PS3)...we might see a NGP game from him though.

OT:

The sales in Japan are horrendous, I am never ever getting hopes up for the sales of a new IP in Japan ever. Even Ninokuni (DS) while sold well underperformed.

This has me very worried about Ninokuni (PS3), I don't think it'll ever make a profit with just 200K-300K sales.
