JRPGs today, no matter the console, have shitty stories compared to what was during the PS1 days, most pepole who care about stories in this genre consider it a fact.

Fragile Dreams (for Wii) had an intellectual and great story (and side stories). Way better than FF & Co. ever had.

Hmm... was it released in EU?

I believe so. I want to say by Rising Star

I thought Valkyria Chronicles, Dragon Quest 8 and FF12 had good stories, even though slightly predictable - still good. however i would agree that these days JRPGs tend to have poor stories, not really sure why??

but i'm willing to bet TLS has an excellent story, considering Sakaguchi hired a professional writer (novelist i think) for the story of Lost Odyssey, so i'm guessing he used the same philiosophy here. to go with something writen by an expert in the field of literature.

If you don't like FF style romance than i would suggest stay away from TLS. BUT if you loved FFIX than you will LOVE TLS.

Haha, i would say theres different levels of FF romance, FF4, FF6, FF7, FF9 to me constitute more subtle romanace, where its not too over the top and it tends to be well written. FF8, FF10 and FF13 are more in your face type romance with a bit too much touchy feeling type stuff.

and i did really like FF9, i think it was an excellent game, but the battle system was not as good as FF7 or FF8 for various reasons, but FF9 is definitly considered 1 of the top tier FFs, (i think it has the highest metacritic too for an FF game, which says a lot).

I do plan on getting a PSP for many of the JRPGs it has, I already got a Wii for Xenoblade and The Last Story (and many other games), I don't plan on getting a DS because the only good JRPG that I heard it has (a JRPG that I will consider "good") is The World Ends with You, and I won't get a 360 for Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia.

What about the likes of A.S.H, Soma Bringer, FFT A2, Valkyrie Profile PotC, Inazuma Eleven, DQ IX, Tales of Hearts, Xenosaga, Contact, Fire Emblem, you don't consider them 'good'?

And don't forget the ports/remakes of games like FFIII-IV, Chrono Trigger, Disgaia, Rhapsody, SaGa 2, DQ IV-VI and the like.

He should probably go back to Sony... I think Nintendo's audience for JRPG is severely limited outside of Pokemon franchise and Dragon Quest...

I find the Last Story to be quite disappointing. There are some good ideas but seeing the time it took for the game to be developped I'd say that I don't understand where went these working hours. Especially on a Wii title where it's (like we know andlike  Sakaguchi said) easier to develop on.

Sakaguchi may have taken too much time trying to make an A-Rpg. He was better on Turn-based. Lost odyssey was better, he should have worked on "loading time" instead.

After all this time... Xenoblade.

I hope We won't have to wait so much for the next one.

The last four weeks for Xenoblade were

Week 32: 450
Week 33: 380
Week 34: 360 (The Last Story launch week)
Week 35: 300

Now that's upsetting...but, at least it's still selling anyway, even if it is at a low level!

Let's wait. We have no idea how it'll fair in the long run. In 3 months time we can judge, not really now

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

1. Ports are ports, not new games :P

2. Xenosaga's story is really good, however it wasn't from this gen, And I heard nothing good about none of the games stated above (except Soma Bringer) from the pepole who I usually ask about which JRPGs I should play.

And it's not just the story, it's a combination of the story with the soundtrack and atmosphere and a lot of other things...

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

1. Doesn't matter if it's new, only if you haven't played it yet (or don't have your old copy anymore).

2. I have to disagree on Xenosaga. The pacing is glacier slow (and don't tell me that's just for dramatic purposes; RPGs are not 26 episode animes that need to pad out the time), too much isn't explained well, and the dialog is still on the sub par level that most games are.

Then again, I find even RPGs from the PS1/Saturn/N64 days aren't that good with their stories. Servicable for games, yes, but not really good stories on their own.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

It does matter if they're new, because if they're not new, they don't matter since I am talking about a trend in a genre.

Did you play the third Xenosaga? (I talked mainly about that one, I do agree that the pacing in the first two is kinda slow).

And... Xenogears' story, or Vagrant Story's, or Final Fantasy Tactics' sstories are amazing, to say the least, and I read a lot of books, if you call them "servicable for games" (as in, comparing them to... like... Gears of War, or Killzone...) I don't think that you understand what you're talking about here... but it's just my opinion.

I've  been saying this for the longest time. The demographic of the userbase has to be taken into accountability. The Wii has made it self the casual/Family oriented console. A game like Last Story is anything but casual. 360s overall fanbase's numbers show that many of them are reluctant to try JRPGs, and yet the PS3 is still starving for great exclusive JRPGs. We saw what happened with a great RPG in Demons Souls (Over a million sales now) and we saw what happened with a mediocre (Though i loved it) one in White Knight Chronicles (600,000 copies sold) and not to mention that the Tales ports have handidly outsold the original versions on the 360/Wii

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi
