"There are like ten games a year that sell over a million units."- Eric Nofsinger.

I should put this in my sig.

Lol, so true. I think someone needs to go speak to a certain Mr. Smeags about the matter

I'd say it's around 50, including evergreen titles and new releases. Because some games only pass the mark in a year, with sales in previous years. It's all very confusing, but I'm sure he's misinformed

I'm going to do it without Smeags' permission.

I'm a rebel.

You awful man. How DARE YOU do something like that without asking permission first?

Also, why isn't it in your sig yet? I am sad now

It's done.

Smeags ain't the boss of me.

I have reported you to Smeags so he can take care of this matter as a responsible citizen

He'll know what to do. And my men have nothing on at the moment. So I'd watch out if I were you

(It's only a joke, settle down )

I approve of this thread.

I'd say that the million mark is moreso a buzzword for us internet forum goers than it is a measurment for success. I mean, we have games like the Iga Castlevania series that constantly sells ~350,000-400,000 and makes a healthy profit. And of course we also have other games like Heavenly Sword that sold over a million yet never saw a dime back.

It's crazy I tell ya simply crazy!

I wish video game development was more open like with movies, where the development costs are open for everyone to see. That would be awesome to see, so we could actually have a measurment of success for the game to reach.

people just look for an arbitary figure to judge a game's success.  However in reality, things are far far more complicated

I agree, on both accounts. The million-mark is poor judgement and more for forumites, and that developers should tell us how much a game cost to produce/develop or whatever. I think it'd be interesting to see the divide between indie games and, say, COD games or something similar

If we dont know the production/ad cost or expected revenues, which we dont know most of the time. Then we might as well just say screw it and stop calling games flops. The only other indication we can based on is what prior games did in the series. but that doesnt really work for new IPs. We can also try to base it on the genre the game belongs in

That's...a novel way of looking at things I suppose...

Interesting is how no-one believes that success is dependant on your competitiors at this point...that surprises me

^^^ thats way too black and white in most cases. Lets look at the Conduit that game sold x amount of copies but COD goes on to sell a hell of alot more. Now Conduit looks like crap because it only sold a fraction of what COD did and they are both competing in a way (both FPSs), but Conduit only costed so much to make and im sure COD might have cost more.

That's pretty much the issue I'm trying to raise in this thread however
