Forums - Sales - X360 only 630k more units than PS3 for the whole of 2007

The question is what will happen when GTA4 hits and MS drops the price.

Can sony afford another pricecut in 3-4 months?

We all consider 2007 to be a big failure for the PS3 but with a $500-600 price for 10 months out of the year and "no games" (360 owners want us to believe this one, rofl) it's amazing to see that the 360 could only sell a mere 10% more for a full year.

I can't believe the PS3 will do worse next year. I actually think the PS3 can double it's 2007 sales with the lower price and lots of new titles.

Am I alone? Anyone here realistically believes the PS3 can do worse or repeat the "crappy" performance of 2007?

I think in 2008 the Ps3 might eat down that 7.3M lead to 3.5M or even less.

For the undisputed leader last gen and a console that supposedly attracts audiences in all the major markets, yeah, it actually is bad coming in 3rd place. There's no way to spin that.

What was the market share between PS2 and XBox?  What's the marketshare between PS3 and XBox 360?

I don't think anyone expected 360 to obliterate the PS3 in sales. However there were plenty who said "Give it a year" for the PS3 as if after a year it would miraculously begin kicking butt... something that hasn't begun happening yet.

If anything, they're flat in Japan and dismal in the US. Others is keeping them afloat right now.

IF microsft does an $100 price cut across the board and has an $180 core arcade system, PS3's momentum should fall off.

If they got that cheap, I would just see more PS3 fans picking up a 360 because of the low price.

I (ironically) have to agree with eugene.

The X360 won't be slowing down next year. The PS3 was *supposed* to sell 5m units on no games at $500-600. Sony has had to drop the price twice, because sales have been so ungodly abysmal.

In the same timeframe of the PS2, the PS3 has floundered, horribly. It took a $200 pricedrop to even get it close to the X360.

The question is if people will buy the PS3 @ $400 throughout next year or not.

$200 price drop? I fail to see this. It launched at $500/$600 and now it's at $400/$500. This is a $100 price drop anyway you look at it.

Optimistic predictions for 2008 (Feb 5 2008): Wii = 20M, PS3 = 14M, X360 = 9.5M

$180 Xbox? I don't see that happening anytime soon, not next year for sure.

I expect MS to drop price mid-2008 but I think Sony will follow suit pretty fast. They will not sit down and see their console go down the drain. They have too much money on the line to let it happen. For Sony it's better to lose $50 more on each console than to slow down sales.

But I don't think either MS or Sony will drop the price a full $100 across all models though. Maybe $50 on the low end and $100 on the high end but that's all. This would put PS3 at $350-$400 and the 360 at $230-$350.

LMFAO!! I remember PS3 fans arguing against this logic earlier this year and now its the other way! This was a pretty big point of contention for a lot of folks so you'll have to pardon me while I get my kicks at the sudden reversal of position.

At least you have it right now~

@Topic,

I do believe the PS3 will have a better year in '08 than it did in '07, but I don't for a second believe that it will double its sales. Big releases, the new price point, and a decent holiday performance will imo propel it to an aproximate 17% year over year increase in sales which based on my projections should equate to around 9m units for the calendar year.

To Each Man, Responsibility

Thats what I have been saying this whole time. PS3 will definitely improve sales and pass 360 by mid 2009. 360 is losing a lot of steam especially after the release of Halo 3. Expect PS3 sell 10-12 million next year.

This is really pretty disingenous. The topic creator is essentially saying, "since the PS3 was only outsold by the 360 by 10% in 2007, it's guaranteed to outsell the 360 in 2008!" Stop and think about that for a minute. The argument is that because the PS3 didn't lose "too badly" this year, it's definitely going to win next year. Sorry, but I'm not jumping on that bandwagon...

In truth, all of the consoles are going to sell pretty much the same in 2008 as they did in 2007. At most, sales will fluctuate ~25% up or down for each one. (I don't expect any console to sell less next year, but no one is going to see massive sales increases either.) It's pretty clear how the 360 sells by now; it should be right around 8m next year, same as this year or possibly a very slight increase. The PS3 will do better next year (it can't possibly be as bad as this past year, right?) but won't come anywhere close to doubling sales. Remember, we've yet to see any proof that it can sustain sales over the long haul. Sales went up in November, but was that due to the price cut, or just seasonal holiday increases? It's too early to tell. Europe is showing positive signs, Japan and America considerably less so. I'd be very surprised if the PS3 sold more than 8-9m next year though.

The Wii still has room for some decent growth next year, but ONLY because supply constraints have prevented us from getting an accurate reading of its true sales level. We still have yet to see true stabilization set in, in other words. Once it stops selling out in America, we'll be able to make more accurate long-term predictions for it as well.

End of 2008 totals: Wii 42m, 360 24m, PS3 18.5m (made Jan. 4, 2008)

how typical the usual people disagree (cough) eugene (cough) mr stickball.. anyways though... i see sales at around 17 mil at the end of next year.. and yes 360 fanboys did say that the 360 would obliterate the ps3 in sales this year.,... and for the record technically they only cut the price once.. to the same price 500 dollars once with the 60gb from 600 to 500 and again with the 80gb from 600 to 500 lol ..and introduce the 40gb at 400
