Forums - Nintendo - Reggie talks prices of software!

"The average iPad app in the Apple App Store costs $4.67 vs. $3.87 for the average iPhone app, according to new research from apps watcher Distimo. "

Which isn't bad, on game terms thats around about the equivalent revenue for the developer of a $15-20 cartridge for the iPad and a $15 cartridge for the iPhone applications. Now if the average sale price can just get another couple of dollars higher you'll see that they'll be able to support the whole handheld ecosystem worth of software.

First things first -- this interview is from GT TV - Feb 4/11. Interview starts at 1:10 if anyone is interested in watching it.

Geoff was not saying that Nintendo should sell all their games for really cheap. He asked Reggie if he really thinks games like Steel Diver are worth full price when people have become accustom to paying very low prices for comparable pieces of software. Reggie says they are, while low priced games are bad for the industry, not sustainable, and disposable.

I think everyone here can agree that selling games for $1-$2 is not sustainable and just perpetuates the boom and bust cycle of iOS developers where a select few do amazingly while many others barely scrape by or go bankrupt. Still, I looked for some recent data and a research firm in the Netherlands found that the average iPhone software sale price was $3.87, while the average iPad software sale price was $4.67. source

Most Nintendo games are far above the quality of games that appears on the AppStore. However, after looking at a gameplay video for the game in question, steel diver, it looks pretty basic and is certainly appears to be below many $10 AppStore, Steam, or PSN games in terms of content and replayability.

@joecool7  im sorry man, but the Wii is NOT this gen's PS2. The Wii is lacking in too much genres for it to be like that. Its interesting that you bring up Xbox and Gamecube. I also had a Gamecube, but lets not kid ourselves here most of the best games on that system were multiplat. (outside of the Ninty games of course) RE4 one of the best non-ninty games on GC. multiplat. Did PS2 get shovelware??? Sure they did, but they also had 3rd parties who actually gave a damn the system. THe PS2 got the most important games last gen, contrast that to Wii and they get the shovelware but 3rd parties give the HDs there best effort and the Wii (like so many people like to point out) get the scraps. Cant see how Wii could be like PS2 or PS1 or hell even SNES. IMHO this is the only gen ive seen where the leading console does not get quality games put on it. And just for laughs, (DMC, MGS, SFs, Tekkens, KOFs, GTAs,) those are just some of the many 3rd party series that appeared on PS2 but has not migrated to Wii

You refer in a past post to many titles on PS3 like BioShock which are found on 360 as well. Also the X-Box got the GTA's and GameCube got MGS:TwinSnakes. GameCube got almost every major multiplatform game and X-Box got even more. The PS2 did have alittle exclusive support and sure some developers gave a damn. But the GameCube and X-Box also had support from developers who gave a damn. Not to mention you talk of being in a store and looking at the games and found PS3 had more hardcore games on the shelf then Wii. I was simply pointing out that last generation multiplatform or not the X-Box and less so the GameCube had more hardcore games on the shelf per capita then the PS2.

I have to say the console that is closest in comparison to the Wii is the PS2. Sure it may not have as many third party exclusives or temporary exclusives as PS2 did but it is the closest. As PS2 had an awful lot of shovel ware and junk on it. I don't think their is another console that had as much junk as PS2 did to compare Wii with. Plus Wii has the best first party support of any console to date with quite a few exclusives.

Lol, Reggie is saying all that now but how many wii and DS games should really be priced for $2? There are a lot if you ask me. It's a threat to nintendo now that they can't get away with overpriced, borrowing Reggie's term, "disposable" games anymore.

This isn't by far the first time that Keighley tried this stuff on Reggie, the most popular instance certainly was the NSMB Wii vs. Modern Warfare 2 sales bet. Keighley asked Reggie about how big he thought NSMB Wii is going to be and when Reggie answered that he believed that it's going to be a big success, Keighley asked: "Bigger than MW2?" Reggie said he is sure that NSMB Wii will outsell one version of MW2 by the end of 2009. Keighley found that very amusing.

Then two months later when NSMB Wii had beaten MW2 on the PS3, Keighley insisted that Reggie had said that NSMB Wii would outsell the 360 version which was quite desperate on his part. The moral of the story is that gaming journalists try to create as much conflict as possible in everything they do regarding Nintendo. You can be sure that if Sony gets asked about their NGP, then nobody will bring up Apple's iPhone and its $2 games as possible threat.

While keighley was obviously trying to goad Reggie into it, he clearly said 360 multiple times.  Keighley never acted like he meant any platform and then a few months later said 'oh, but I really meant 360'.  The second time Keighley clarifies 360 only, Reggie says "I do believe so", and then lays out the timeline that he'll accept.

And guess what? NSMBWii outsold MW2 so the bet was pathetic to begin with.

Why don't they make more anti-Apple journalism, I'm sure it would produce just as many hits.

@Joecool7  1st party support is completly subjective. IMHO the Sony 1st party titles are better than the Ninty ones this gen, Ill take Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank, Infamous, Modnation, LBP over any of Ninty's offerings any day of the week. Hell I got more 1st party SOny games that i have Wii games period. I would say they were better last gen as well, PS1 era? Not so much. I see your point about the GC and Xbox, but then that doest help your Wii argument. The Wii gets crappy 3rd party support, everyone knows it, there's a thread about it at least every other week. The PS2 got great 3rd party support. THat is the key difference between the two and that cannot be denied. Put it this way. How much 3rd party series/genres were on GC/and or Xbox but NOT on PS2. Jedi Knight, KOTOR. How much on PS2??? Tekken, Soul Calibur 3, all the FFs, Star Ocean 3, most of the RPGs. Now look at Wii how much core games that the HDS get that never hit Wii?? Mass Effect, Fallout, FFs(main series), Tekken, Street Fighter, MW2, a slew of FPSs, Grid, Virtua Fighter, Arkham Asylum, Soul Calibur(a real one) Mvs.C2&3, BlazBlue, Orange Box. I could keep going but I think you see my point
